Distant terrain does not update itself. You can't see player made bases nor can you see alterations to existing POI's. Destroyed POI's still show up as pristine from a distance.
Roland, what about distant trees? Will we can see distant trees after destoed its? Or its problem only distant POI's?

Nothing in distant terrain accurately reflects what has been changed up close. The objects in distant terrain are 2D billboards. They aren't the actual objects you interact with when within the LOD chunk range you have selected. I would be surprised if they are ever able to do what you want. It would be awesome and impressive but I don't see it as very likely. But I could (hopefully) be wrong.

Distant terrain lod objects are created when chunks are formed, so they could reload/regen the chunk based on current blocks, but uh, that would be slow.

Good to know :) Maybe it is possible to mod the scope on the rifles in A17 to at least include night vision?
That being said, I CAN'T STAND SNAKES! lol

I need to get myself together and visit a reptile zoo, get over this non-sense.

Do we have any arizonans here? When I go visit my family there I need to know beforehand if there is a lot of snakes snaking around.
I'm not quite from Arizona, but i'm from the same desert. I've had plenty of friends and family talk about seeing a rattlesnake, but I've only ever seen one in my lifetime (i do spend a significant amount of time outside). on the other hand, we've seen several king snakes in our back yard, a couple snakes we don't know the name of, and went to death valley and saw a sidewinder. I've seen 10,000 more lizards though.

A compromise would be the program keeps a list of all updated chunks as the person plays so on next game start, refreshes those chucks with the updated lod objects?

That's exactly what I was thinking. It could also refresh everything when the last player leaves the server, since at that point there should be no server load from players being active, and things would be updated next time someone connected.

That's a shame; I suppose they keep it this way to save resources, but I wonder if it would be possible for the distant terrain to update itself at certain intervals, like when it detects little activity on the server, or whenever the server is restarted. Seems like it shouldn't be a problem resource-wise then.
Thats a very good question. I can not see any drawbacks performance wise in games updating distant meshes upon restart so if you are logged in you see the destroyed building but as soon as the "server" is restarted the files refresh themselves and you now see destroyed buildings removed in the distance.

Thoughts from the poi experts?

What he said, yes.

I thought that cold blooded meant they lack the homeostasis necessary to maintain their body temperature regardless of fluctuations in the environment. Snakes don't adapt their body heat to the surrounding air-- they involuntarily succumb to the surrounding air unless they use a warm rock as a means to maintain their internal body temperature and resist the surrounding air temperature....
Yes, you're right... but to further elaborate my point:

http://coolcosmos.ipac.caltech.edu/image_galleries/ir_zoo/coldwarm.html - quote from this article: Cold-blooded creatures take on the temperature of their surroundings. They are hot when their environment is hot and cold when their environment is cold. In hot environments, cold-blooded animals can have blood that is much warmer than warm-blooded animals. Cold-blooded animals are much more active in warm environments and are very sluggish in cold environments. This is because their muscle activity depends on chemical reactions which run quickly when it is hot and slowly when it is cold. A cold-blooded animal can convert much more of its food into body mass compared with a warm-blooded animal.

Snakes are ectotherms (of the cold-bloods) - they lack the ability to generate body heat internally. AKA, poikilotherms, they have to rely on external sources to regulate their body temperature, both to stay warm and to avoid becoming overheated.

I wouldn't talk about something unless I was sure. :)

Hey, do you really kill snakes like that , we just move them away carefully no matter poisonous or not. Well, we needeed example once, but it was exeption :) (reason on my post above)
that was a one time thing up north in the 80s. now I move them. only kill copperheads or cotton mouths and Coral Snakes. last week found a 5 foot rat snake, scared the crap out of me. he was under my gator.

I live in the Phoenix area. I've only seen one snake since I moved here 9 years ago and it was a harmless Cali king snake. All the rattlesnakes are usually found outside of the city and in the warmer summer months, aka the time of year that you don't want to go outside.

There are lots of cockroaches and bad drivers from out of state tho.

That would require regular server restarts for a multiplyer environment, not an ideal situation.

I think this is one of those things that hasn't been done yet because of higher priorities. Technically it's not difficult, you already have the algorithm and time isn't really an issue as it can be done over the course of dozens of frames. I'm pretty sure large chunks of the algorthm could go into the c# job system although I wouldn't like to say for certain without going through the code. Worst case scenario it can be done with the old coroutine system which isn't that bad for just fire-and-forget algorithms.

I have lived in AZ since 2000 and was even a wildland firefighter out here in my younger years. Have seen plenty of snakes and other critters trying to get away from the fire. I have to say the terrain in 7DTD is quite accurate to mid mid-elevation desert and higher terrain mountains. Honestly, I think the plains were more accurate to lower elevation desert, but I understand why it was scaled back. The one thing that is off is Yucca Fruit... can't seem to find it anywhere irl Arizona... am I doing something wrong? 😉
