Any non smartass reason for this post? Thought not which means, why post it?
Would you believe me if I told you it was to see if a party/festivity was planned..? ^^ If not, why so serious?

@Gazz, thanks for the update! I have no clue what it all means, but if it's 30% smaller, that has to be good!

Please feel free to the rest to make jokes about things being smaller.. :)

If the post had any other purpose and that was just a snarky little joke at the end, I would probably have chuckled at it and went to the next post. But it was literally nothing but an "It's been a year" post.

Plus, I'll admit, work has kicked my butt this week so I'm probably a little snarkier than usual myself.

There's not much exciting news. People are fixing and optimising.
What I worked on the last few days (with Chris, who rarely visits this wretched hive of scum and villainy, and Joel) was optimising the "distant POI" model generation.

With some new code, some creativity, and a lot of sweat the combined size of those meshes went down almost 30% compared to the A16 meshes - and A17 has both more prefabs and generally more complex ones with collapsed floors or roofs.
Yeah well, you're here :)

Thanks for the update... It hit the spot just fine!

How do you actually create a textured mesh from the prefabs? Is is using the (outside) voxels to dynamically generate a low poly mesh?

Or is that manual work.

Offtopic : I start to imagine how when stable or even experimental is near, how almost all of us will start to think how to make next day/night/day/.. cycle awesome, everyone with its small rituals to get enough pizza or beer, get comfy, kiss his kids for good morning and say good bye see ya next week. This "ïts been a year" makes me feel better somehow, cuz it will worth it even more and well.. can`t wait.

They load their editor and type "mesh all", then it reads the imposter blocks from the xmls to generate an low poly version of the prefab.

Are you going to force the server to update the meshes from time to time? I've seen a ton of people comment on seeing the distant mesh for buildings that they have already destroyed.

No offense, but the way Kinyajuu reply trollers, nope the nice one is not him. But maybe Roland.
and I really like Kinyajuu's answer...
I guess that depends on your views...

I'd say that Kin is actually helping these people and not being rude at all.

When did it become a crime to point out peoples obvious disrespect?

Is it better to let such folks continue to think they are in the right, when in fact the opposite is true?

Dont be so afraid to point out wrongs... Just be respectful doing it.

I actually miss the Health Bar at the top of the thread. I look for it first thing when I come on to read the posts. :(

I was looking forward to it becoming just a sliver near the end.

But it was basically just another "It's been a WHOLE year." reminders. Just trying to hide as a snarky joke.
Glad you were here to point that out for us! :encouragement:

Besides, it's DaVega...pretty sure there was no attempt to hide the snark.

So those models in the map-preview (where we can test the seed), are they then the same as those distant models?

Thanks for the Update, appriciated.

So, i read between the lines that the Advantage of smaller Meshes potentially enables more complex POIs or Cities in general?

Would be cool :)

I mean they got really big in Comparsion to A15, but i dream of a NY or Berlin Size City.... Yes this will stay a dream, but hey.... ^^

That would be something! Or have the entire map be one big city! :)

I hope we can get huge cities reminiscent of zombie movies like this:

There's always something very creepy about new york style cities in zombie movies, with all the empty stacked cars and ♥♥♥♥. You could even add something crazy that only spawns in these areas like the creepy ass zombies from I Am Legend, in the underground an abandoned buildings in the lower floors.

It would also be fun in PVP with the risk of getting snipe'd and snipeing others from very tall buildings.
