Eventually, the bears will get hungry again (Lore question: are zombies always hungry?) and move away. You walk in and pick out the jeep that says: "This is me".

In all seriousness, it almost does sound like it at this point. Sounds like it's been in early access for so long, they are just trying to wrap things up as soon as they can now.

Eh, no. It wasn't a joke. MM said A17 is nearly beta at the end of this video.A17 is a HUGE change, so much in fact it is almost like a move from alpha to beta. In effect, it is also almost like getting a sequel game for free since it doesn't cost you anything and changes so much of the game.
It is not literally beta nor is it literally a sequel.

He said in the video it's going to be nearly beta, so unless they add a ton of features in the next couple of alphas (which is quite possible) then the game won't nearly be finished.
IDK to me it's a big feature for most ppl and I can understand them wanting to hold off on talking about it. If everything goes well they can hype that to no end during their release. If the bandits don't turn out the way they want it.. well.. no need to hype.
His actual words were "nearly beta but not actually beta" and "it's getting very close". He then followed that up with the fact they're changing nearly everything and there is "so much more to come" (right at the end). So it's not like they're going to go directly to beta without some additional alpha testing and features. It may not be a make you laugh joke but it is certain to me that he didn't say that expecting people to interpret it literally. There may not be an A19 but there will be an A18 based on everything I've heard and seen.
A lot of the "A17 stuff" will get used on bandits/NPC.
From the original kickstarter they have always maintained that some features would come after gold release. The exact features saved until after release will be shuffled from what was mentioned in the kickstarter but there is no need for a couple more alphas. They could very easily go to Beta after alpha 17 and polish everything up to release standards and then add any missing features as DLCs afterward. They plan to continue fully supporting this game at least 2 years after release.
If we consider the whole package of sensory input (and the zombies could be sensing through smell just as well as through sight), the player is on as good or better than equal footing with the zombies. Blood Moon zombies sense the player through walls, but the player senses those zombies through walls, too, on account of all the noise they make. It’s not like they’re doing anything to conceal their presence. Add the fact that the player can see through glass (and shoot, and build, and craft...) and I don’t think the player’s getting the short end of the stick here.
