More realistic sand IS fun
In this case, yes.

Most of mining is boring and predictable. Sand / gravel being unpredictable was the goal.

Or does no one remember A15 gravel? It had 0 SI and would fall down as reliably as a Tetris block.

A16 gravel had juuust enough SI to stick... a little. So you had to pay attention. ;)

Which make sense if 1 block (or a couple) of sand was actually more realistic and didnt auto kill you, if it was that loose it would only maybe injure you. Not be more deadly than the undead.

Not only that but the majority of the time its way more punishing than dying from zombies because the falling blocks kill you AND destroy your backpack. (bye bye mods you spend your whole playthrough gathering and crafting)

1-2 blocks of sand don't kill you.
I dont know if 1-2 sand does or not havent died from it in a17 yet, 1-2 blocks of soil does if you arent wearing armor though. go try digging into the side of the concrete cave entrance with the iron door and see. Just dig out 3 blocks and it collapses.

Either way it does way more damage than what is supposed to be the main threat in the game.

Well, we can talk about things like the transformation of alpha to beta quartz (and back).A real pain in the butt with pottery.
Hmm.. Don't know really much about that topic to be honest. I've only recently learned that one uses only 1 part quartz to 1 part feldspar to 2 parts kaolinite when making pottery.. Is that true?

If 1 block represents a cubic meter; dumping a cubic meter of sand on someone can seriously harm/kill someone. (1 cubic meter of sand weighs more than a tonne).

I should not have put the word realistic, realism is not an argument. Again, game. Zombie game with not much realism to start with. My argument is about fake world, not real life.

Underground is NOW officially dangerous. No one could dig out a large deposit (one with 10+ boulders at the surface) and not use a lot of safety structures. I dig with my strongest armor on now, saved me twice!

The counter is not trivial in the least:

1) Make a 13x13 platform over the center of a resource area at the surface.

2) Dig under a quarter the platform 2 meters down and then put the beginning of what will be pillars to bedrock 5 meters apart.

3) Continue digging like that until bedrock.

Note 1: You might want to make the surface platform thicker depending on GS and to avoid the area during BM.

Note 2: This has potential in being part of a defensive labyrinth if you think about it. :)

Note 3: Making an escape ladder well 20 meters away is advisable too.

and i thought Fun > Realism
So much can change in a year
A lot of people would have fun figuring out a way to mine in the desert(hint: pit mining). If all you are after is tunnels then, yes it will be a pain in the butt but you are basically digging kilometer long tunnels in a game to avoid the main threat so you won't get a lot of sympathy here.

Fun is > Realism but when realism is just as, or even more, fun then it wins.

Do the various "Dungeons" have names? like the house with Gracie/boards? or the house with the tunnels underneath that go on forever.

they are cool!

also are there quest for these or do you just find them at random?

I remember playing at the beach as a kid. One would lie down and the rest covered him/her up to the neck with (loose and dry) sand. If it was a foot high only adults could barely free themselves. Just saying.

There is nothing wrong with realism in a game. Even in a game about zombies. There are lots of things in the game that are realistic. Gravity is somewhat realistic for example. If all of a sudden you could jump and just float until you decided to land then some people would find it fun. But it would ruin the game for most people. Objects in the game that have counterparts in the real world should be as realistic as possible. As long as the realism doesn't get in the way of the point of the game or make it too tedious. The argument going on right now about sand is a perfect example. You can still mine you just have to adjust. Some of the adjustments may be too tedious but others are perfectly fine so, in my opinion, this realism fits perfectly fine.

Game is Voxel

We sacrifice so much for it

* Far less weapons and eqip such a game normally have,

* Ugly grafic (compared to non voxel games)

* Far higher system requirements than comparable non voxel games

And then we make the Underground a no go area.

That make sense !

But i am out of hat topic, i guess you need some month until you understand my point of view

boring and predictable.
I remember the Gravlanche days - was fun. I do miss the old mining, though. Where nodes looked liked something instead of a mash of a texture that we have now. When you could harvest the sand around the iron, lead etc and leave it free-standing like a cazy worm. Is there any way to mod that type of mining back in? I miss the excitement of seeing it "I found iron!" Instead of the current "Is that iron? *swing* nope. " Hey that looks like iron *swing* nope.. " Make mining great again!
