PC Death from Menu search

On the 7th day after a good grind collecting supplies to fority my base I die stuck on the crafting menu because the textbox was selected. I was in a time of need and to be halted like that seemed just unecessary.

Is there any way to quickly open and close the menu swiftly with a single press?

 
It's always a good idea to 'take cover' when doing anything such as crafting. Situational Awareness some call it; and even then its not a good idea to sit within the menu's of anything because those dogs will sneak up on you.

 
I try to avoid using the search all together. If you are familiar enough with the game it can be faster to use the drop down columns. I have to search now and then with mods, but vanilla game is pretty quick in my opinion. Use escape key when you get stuck as stated.

 
I know where the things are so I don't search at all... OH! I just remembered that GamersForKicks said to favorite the ones you want/use a lot and just click on the favorites.

 
I'v been having similar problems. I died recently because my head was stuck in a refrigerator. I keep picturing it and laughing.
