PC Crouching isn't really crouching anymore.

Crouching only lowers the player by about 0.25m or 1/4 of a block in A17-e. In A16 crouching lowered the player by about 0.6m, more than half a block. Crouching is more like just sneaking now and not really what I would consider to be crouching. Now if you stand on top of a wall 3m tall and crouch down you can't hit a zombie in the head with a club anymore, it seems like we've lost about 0.35m of reach aiming downwards while crouching. I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure I've seen MM himself using the clubbing from above technique in his old preview videos, but this tactic has been crippled in A17. Is there any chance we can go back to the old crouch position? Perhaps you could add a crouch move that is separate from a sneak move.

Thanks for all your hard work.

I think maybe the devs are just purposely looking for ways to handicap the player... aka forced difficulty.

Remember when we could crouch past 1 block openings? Good times.

Remember when we could actually tell when a zombie noticed we were there? Those were also good times.

Lol yeah, I missed that sensed notification so we at least had a heads up that "hey something noticed you and is trying to find you"

That "sensed" and "hunted" indicator wasn't as comprehensive as the new stealth bar we have now, but it was easier to tell what was going on. Now, the bar increases and decreases without really telling you if you are just sensed, hunted, or actually spotted via line of sight. It only tells you what your current stealth level is, and the changes in it when zombies are sensing, hunting, or looking right at you are rather ambiguous most of the time.

I got the impression it is just a noise meter.

Yeah it needs some explanation. My understanding is that it's just a visual indicator of a visibility stat that enters into calculations (alongside distance and line of sight, etc) of whether a zombie spots you if its visual cone overlaps with the player.

Crouch sucks when you can't hide behind a block. Plus it helps with the visibility if you need to peek into somewhere. What do you gain by nerfing the height of a crouch???

I really like the new stealth bar, it is really cool. The eye with "sensed" was too stupid. How can you know if someone have seen you?

It's called abstraction. The point isn't to be hyper-realistic; it's to provide a fun game experience. Before at least you had an indicator that a ninja zombie was creeping up behind you.

By your logic, we shouldn't be able to collect gas until we find empty jerry cans or steel drums.

Crouching also seems broken in this version because:

1) You have no visual indication that you're crouched. Within 30 minutes of gameplay I found myself not knowing that I'm crouched other than I was moving slowly for some reason

2) You need to constantly look away from what you're focusing on to check your visibility

So, according to entityclasses.xml,

"CrouchYOffsetFP" value="-0.65"

The xml still says crouch lowers by 0.65m but in game I'm only seeing a lowering of about 0.25m. So why was the Y offset reduced? Is it a bug?

In terms of realism I get that knowing whether you have been sighted or not breaks the immersion. However if it is to be removed then I'd like some form of audible cue. It may be there, and certainly most zombies seem to give a little growl upon making their way to you but that's about it.

I don't mind if the crouching height was nerfed in order to alter an exploit or to assist in game logic, but aside from the actual interaction of the character to the environment (ie: crouching on a higher level to club an enemy on a lower one) the visual element of crouching does need to be addressed. In a similar manner to @pavichokche above, I've found myself crouched for some time when I've thought I was standing. It's easy to tell if you are crouched of course, you simply stand up or try to run, but that's the point it's reactive rather than proactive. I can't tell when I am crouched that I am crouched and that is purely down to the camera not physically dropping to the height I expect.

If see the stealth bar, you're crouched.

Crouching is actually really effective. At night, it drops to about '3', and I can skirt past zombies at butt-clenching distances. As a rule of thumb, the number indicates how many blocks away zombies can see/hear you. If i'm planning a trip to the trader, I'll often steal the night in stealth mode and push out to save daylight. I don't have a bike yet, ofc.

Doing anything has the obvious and unfortunate consequence of being loud as unholy ****, even while stealthed. Punching grass may just as well be slamming a car door.

Being out at night is perfectly fine. Combat at night is suicide, and there is no more one-shot stealth kills, and once you plug an arrow into something, it's coming straight at you.

I've asked about crouching twice in the developer discussions thread and made this thread to try to get an answer. I'm still hoping to get some info from someone from TFP about whats happening with crouching. Is the old crouch gone for good? Will we never be able to really crouch again?
