Windows Crawlers can't hit you when you are looking at their exact direction

I just stood next to a crawler when trying out the damage setting and he could not land a single hit after 20 swings on me when I was watching him directly, but as soon as I tilt my camera at least 30° from him, he lands every single hit as intended.
