I voted for: I like both random books and level gating as described above.

As it involves a real sense of progression to the game, just don't put leather tanning or forge back as a book/perk. :p I hated the alpha where both were locked behind a book, I'd usually never find that damn forge book till week 3. I'd have to pray I get lucky and find one of those house POI's that had a forge in it to use. Then again if you guarnteed every trader has at least a working forge, i'd be fine with it being a book/perk. However, I want the skills to be BOTH a perk and a book for recipies locked behind gates, so you can get lucky and find it for free in the world, or spend the points to get it. This is how Valmod does it and I prefer it. Really makes you think: Do I need this now and am willing to spend the points to get it, or can I wait and get it for nothing from a book eventually.

I don't like books or level gated crafting skills, but I don't have a better alternative. As for needing a schematic for each gun you make, the schematics should be about twice as common as they are. In my last game on 90 minute days, it took over 2 weeks to find a pistol schematic. So while I had a decent stock of low level pistols I couldn't repair, disassemble, and combine them to get a better quality pistol.
In that case, I have to ask if guns are still found as loot, or would I be going for weeks without a pistol? I prefer quiet weapons as they don't alert everything in the neighborhood and that prevents jerks in houses from destroying loot containers so they can destroy walls so they can get to you. And since the team has made the mistake of making empty containers non-lootable, every loot container is more precious for the XP. And even more because you can't loot zombies anymore.

Man, WTF? Did they take scavenging skill out of the game or reduce the XP to level by 75%? Because otherwise they have just seriously ♥♥♥♥ed up the game.
You sound like me, I only use the pistol, smg, or bow/crossbow to kill sleepers, because otherwise the whole poi wakes up and the zombies make a bunch of noise. The game really needs a npc voice slider so we can turn the zombies down or even mute them, they make way to much noise, especally when attacking. Actually there is alot of stuff i'd like added to the games menus like actual audio sliders for stuff like player/non-player audio etc.

I like books and schematics because they encourage exploration and scavenging. Otherwise I'd just mine for xp and wrench stuff for parts and that would be boring.I don't like books and schematics because sometimes the RGN ♥♥♥♥s me and I'm level 70 and still don't have a minibike or a spiked club.

I think the RNG should be tweaked to either (a) offer books and schematics at a slightly higher rate or (b) weight the results so that books and schematics you need have a slightly increased chance of being found compared to books you don't need.

Level gates I can take or leave. I wouldn't want them to get any more restrictive than they are, however.
Most mods add minibike part drops to certan zombies and the world, so you can get one without the book. In War of the Walkers the Utility worker zombies tend to drop minibike parts, I got most of my parts for one out of a horde of them. Well the book locked ones anyway: seat, handlebars and frame. Last game by day 5 I was lucky enough to have a minibike, due to finding the parts, it was a very crappy minibike at first but at least I had one for the storage.

I'm the crafter / explorer of the group, I'll have a high construction tools, maybe a medium mining tools and an intermediate scavenging.

Why should I be locked out of crafting better items, just because I'm not getting tons of exp snuffing Z's?

Not a female dog post, but a solid question, other games, I might be the only one on for the horde night, and get tons of exp. It's all in how individuals like to play the game, and to some exent, rngjesus. I have gone weeks without finding the crossbow schematic, other games, I've found it on the first day.

I also like the concept of specific loot in a specific area, (not sure how hard that would be though) I love it when I find concrete mix but I don't always find it at the hardware store.

I'm liking the ideas of multiple routes to gain various abilities.

You're a scavenger and you want to learn how to make a weapon but you don't want take time out from your scavenging to level up a skill you would otherwise never use? Fine, pay someone to teach you the skill.

Want to learn how to make your own equipment? Fine, get a load of materials and give it a go, eventually you'll get better.

Excellent craftsman but need stuff normally found during scavenging? Fine, sell an excellently crafted weapon to buy basic resources.

(This role is already largely fulfilled by traders)

This is how it works in real life. I know quite a few reenactment enthusiasts who love waving swords at each other while wearing armour. Not many of them have the time or skill to make the stuff they use but they have these things called "regular jobs" that allow them to trade for what they need. There are also people who'll teach you how to make the equipment in exchange for pictures of the Queen which are often given to "office workers" in exchange for grinding what they call "paperwork". Weird people :-)

What if there were skill prerequisites to using books/schematics? Maybe a new player can assemble a crossbow if they have the schematic right in front of them, but need a certain level of weapons smithing to actually be able to memorize it. Maybe you need to read a book on basic chemistry before you can understand a book's specifications on making an effective crucible(I don't know much about steelworking). I could see this leading to tough inventory management choices on what information to bring along.

Right now crafting is in a bit of a flux condition. The skills and perks having to do with crafting are not hooked up right now and the role of books is still developing so they aren't hooked up either. This is temporary and I don't even know what the developers will settle on-- although there is a clue in that the gun recipes, at least, include gun schematics as one of the ingredients.
At any rate, presently you know all recipes from day 1 and there are no level gates preventing you from crafting anything even as a level one character. The only restrictions right now are having access to the correct workstation and having the correct tool inserted in the tool slot for that workstation.

This brought up a concern that those who prefer to have random books and achieving requisite levels before being able to craft something will have their way of playing removed. What are your thoughts?
As long as they don’t turn it into dare I say it *COUGH GAG COUGH* RUST. Please do not turn it into that game.

I am a base builder mostly, and I like both book and level gating. It gives me a sense of accomplishment when I unlock a recipe to make something useful.

Having said that, pure randomness can be very frustrating when it comes to book drops. Book drop probability either has to gradually increase with every failed check, or there has to be some alternative way to acquire said book - like trader, for example.

Some simpler designs should be based of perks/skills, imitating improvisation.

Advanced and more technical/technological stuff should be gated behind books, we're not all engineers after all.

Thats why I say anything book locked, should also be buyable with skill points from leveling up. It then becomes a choice of: do I need this right now? or can I wait? also if challenge quests that award skill points are still a thing in A17, you can eventually make said points up with some effort.

I'd also like books that we already learned to be scrapable for a itme that when you gather 5 from 5 books they craft into a thing that awards 1 skill point. As I play SP, I usually just scrap any skill books I don't need as I usually don't have the room to carry them, and they are sort of low-value compared to other stuff. It'd just be nice if they would scrap into something more useful than ONE piece of paper.

Also I want a shotgun silencer, Just saying XD.

I think books could give some bonus instead of unlock crafting. You read a book on guns ? Now you can fix it easily and be more precise.

You read a cookbook ? Now your preparations feeds better.

You read a book on tools ? Now your tools are more durable.

etc

If you don't find any book, you can craft everything i your character got the level.

If you find a book, you will do somethings better.

PS : sorry if my english is not really good
Agree; this approach works very well in several of the mods.

Personally, I'm not a fan of gating, either by level or book.
Well, it's shaping up nicely.

While many things like gun crafting are in fact skill-gated you can be a lvl 1 drooling idiot and craft a gun... if you find a schematic that will be used up as an ingredient.

The master crafter would craft a better item from the same schematic but hey, whatcha expect? (*)

i make it short without any discribtion

I hate all the changes I heard off the last few weeks !!!

Why the devs try to deliver me a brand new (other!) game ???

Their job is so simple (naturaly) - I want them to remove the bugs in the working systems - and listen carefully to the comunity !!!

I dont want them to remove (or change) everything that i loved and also worked well so far.

I feel like getting dislodged to the game more and more!

As long as they don’t turn it into dare I say it *COUGH GAG COUGH* RUST. Please do not turn it into that game.
Meh, if it wasn't for the pvp and the players on PVE servers finding ways to grief you still, I liked rust.

Well it's still book gating but books are a one time use only. Which addresses the problem of useless book duplicates.

PS:That disclaimer is golden, you should paste it on every post you make

I voted both from both an immersion as well as a meta-game perspective.

Immersion: I might know my way round sharpening an axe and a little light metalworking. That does not mean I mean I know how to smith(?) a decent pickaxe. (I used to make my own lockpicks, back from before you could easily order em online - and it took me ... something like 100+ hours to make a decent one that didnt bent, break or wear out in less time then it too to make it with hand tools).

Same thing for many other things - Even if I can make a garden shed or build a low brick fence that something completely different then load-bearing structures. If you can put together a computer or pull a new high voltage wire in your house doesn't mean you'll easily know how to make effective trigger plates (that stand up to zombie wear and tear).

in short: Even with general applicable knowledge a lot of things have a level of finesse to get a good result. A "book" would give you that knowledge.

meta-game: both leveling and gating help 'stretch out' the interesting period and may force you to do something different this time round which is more interesting then settle in a routine that works - I like random gen exactly because you have to keep adapting. (Mind you - some weighing in the RNG so you chances of getting to day 68 without a wrench would be low would be nice)

There is thing you can do to 'mellow' the absolute randomness of it.

If i manage to get to level 60 crafting perhaps I should be able to figure out how to make a steel bolt even if I didnt read a book (so at level X you'd get that knowledge 'for free' - but you can get there sooner with a book)

You can mix and match for balance and believability what items might be learned that way and what really requires a book (like an engine for example).

Alternatively - a certain skill level gives you access to the item - as not to be locked out. But to get to an item beyond orange or yellow tier you'd need a book on how to do it properly. (for example: 40 craft + 30 smith gives you access to a metal crossbow - but you wont be able to make a better one then yellow tier untill you read a book on it (for details on metal flex, effective triggers, how to get a really good string/wire)

It would be a bit harder to balance it all, but also make it much more balanceable - in the fase we're in now propably ever closer to the front of pimp minds.

Another one, from mods I played, was surviver notes. If you collect enough notes (or enough notes of the right kind) you can 'make a book'.

Now that we have dungeon-POI's a chance to find some notes made by previously existing survivors or the rare backpack drop seems entirely believable and might help balance out RNG madness where that one book you won't just won't drop.

just some ideas to keep both level and object gating as well as 'round of' the extreme of the RNG

I think some are good and some are bad.

The steel gate was bad because you had to waste tons of points leveling random skills you normally wouldn't have to if you were playing co-op. There were a few things like that that created needless duplication with limited skill points.

But gates like the crossbow we're more understandable. That weapon was great and a bit too easy to make without a gate.

The compound bow is another story I spent over 50 days in game and never found one.
