I was wondering if there is any way to play against each other in local. You cant directly hurt the other and i was thinking if there is a way to change that.

 
Use any type of explosive, that'll frag your split screen buddy. Of course you can also still wreck their base and steal their belongings among other grief causing mischief.

Other than that, don't think you can. Would be a cool addition though...

 
technically no.... but you can turn on damage to other players i thought? theres achievements for killing X amount of players....

Yeah. I have placed tnt at my buddy's house discreetly while he was focusing on a mini-horde. A cop blew it up, along with my buddy. I just thought it would be cool if we could have a proper local pvp fight and i could snipe him from far away.
