I think it would be more engaging and appropriate for a zombie apocalypse if instead of gathering a few parts and building a vehicle, you have to find the necessary things to fix one of the existing dead cars in the game. At first you gotta get it running and from there you keep adding to it, eventually turning it into a Mad Max vehicle.

 
Vehicle Madness offers this.  I haven't tried it yet, but it's on my list for my next game now that it is updated for 1.0.  :)

 
This actually makes lot more sense. I always wondered why you cant take something off the road, it would add a lot to the immersion (imagine finding abandoned 1969 chevy camaro lol)
I am for repurposing some of the vehicles outside POIs. But most of them must require a brand new car battery, engine parts, fuel, tires, and so on, so a given player wouldn`t be able just to sit in and drive off. Normal civilian vehicles might have worse stats here and there and practically no armor.

Yeah, and that would make up the gameplay like 100 times interesting, vehicle breaking down in middle of a trip, right? That is something this game should have had. But now it feels like it is turning into something else than survival, they keep dumbing down things and making it almost an arcade experience. Which I absolutely have no understanding as of why...
I have been informed of a vehicle mod by a modder called Rags, that from what I can tell so far, is exactly what I'm thinking. 

I'll hopefully be able to load it up later today and report back.

But imagine if they had injuries like broken pop or broken tires. Over heating so you need a new radiator, oil issues. Etc

Sounds like a headache.  I already modded the plow to have more damage resistance since the 4x4 takes damage everywhere.  I could easily afford to repair it constantly, but I don't want to.  Adding more maintenance stuff just ruins it more for me.  If I want a vehicle simulation game, I can go somewhere else for it.  I prefer the arcade style here.

This will not be a survival game, but a car mechanic simulator.
Maybe, of course, it would be worth adding some kind of breakdown system, but in the game you always have to do something anyway. Either we have run out of coal and saltpeter for gunpowder, or we need to collect herbs for wicks, or we need to make cartridges for the turrets.
