Chicken Stress????? Really

Ouch Quit It

Chronic Cougher
Stressed out chickens.....really....this is the added content we get! Really, Really!! I mean cmon if thats the best you got.....its time to pack it in.! I can think of 100 things that would be better. Bring back more blocks like reinforced wood blocks, metal reinforced wood blocks, reinforced concrete, more animals, spiders, BETTER weather, so its not raining every 5 minutes...Something, Anything would be better. Maybe put those hours of work into ,,,I dont know....BANDITS!!!! Its only been 3-4 years of their coming SOON!!!

Coughs * Airport POI * Coughs.

I think it's kinda funny. Doesn't bother me really. You only need two chickens to get the breeding started. Took me about 25 min of going up the road one way and then the other. Got them both less than 1k from the base.

To be fair, their implementation kind of sucks.
Maybe share some ideas on how you'd wanna see it improved instead of just whining yourself. And please, spare the complaining on its looks because if that's the only issue you have then there is no issue. That always the problem, people dribble complaints but almost never offer anything constructive.

No, they also recently gave us the combining station, sandbox options, apiary, etc. I don't think they need to "pack it in", they are doing absolutely fine, but if you are this disappointed, maybe you should pack it in?

I expected a chicken coop to actually look like a chicken coop, but instead, we got this pastel, rainbow-colored dollhouse that feels like a glitch from a Barbie game. It’s tiny, out of place, and you can’t even see any actual chickens inside. We waited all this time for this? The coops already sitting in the game's POIs look miles better especially that one small, realistic coop where chickens actually roam around. Every other workstation in this game looks gritty and fits the survival vibe perfectly. Who asked for a pastel toy house? If I wanted to paint things pink or whatever, I’d do it to my own base, not have the devs force a Barbie dreamhouse into my zombie apocalypse.

Personally I don't mind the idea and appreciate that they added more than just a chicken coup. The thought matters but I also don't think it was necessary. Chicken events wasn't on my bingo card for things I would like to see.

That being said. I think the spawning of chickens is bad. It's immersion breaking and silly.

The chicken attacking you is fine and makes sense. I would like to see the chicken eventually calm down so you can pick it up again

Simple dropping of the chicken should be the primary reaction like 70% of the time. The others should make up the remaining 30%

No horde spawning. If anything, trigger the current game stage wandering horde to eventually meander to that area. No spawning in front of my face. This should also be the lowest probability at no more than 10% chance.

Lastly I think the stress meter should rise more slowly when running and not at all when walking. It's already a pain to bring the chicken back walking I don't think we need stress events for that.

Chickens don't look stressed out to me. They're kind of strutting all the time.

The only critter I would bring back is the hornet.

Thanks for replying without reading my comment. Lol.

I could've lived without it as well, but there have been lots of people asking for things like this over the years. I don't mind them adding it.

And finally, someone actually adding something to the conversation rather than foaming at the mouth over how it looks. So many people crying about it but not offering any useful feedback. It just got added in, is currently in an EXP build. Now is the time to offer feedback and suggestions yet most are just screaming that it is ugly. Super useful feedback right there.

I'm okay with it using smell basically to draw zombies to you, should honestly draw in any animal that would attack chickens as well, really. It spawning more chickens or hordes doesn't really make sense to me either. But the chicken you drop attacking you makes perfect sense, though I agree it should calm down after a few attacks or something.

The stress meter seems fine to me as is, other the few bugs it seems to have with getting stuck. Maybe a little slower while just walking, running seems fine.

I've commented on it before... yes, it looks bad and they should have made it look more appropriate. Practically no one if placed in the situation that this game puts you in would make a chicken coop like that. That alone is enough to say it's a dumb choice. But if you like how it looks, that's fine.

There is also the minigame... chickens are already rather uncommon to find (and now that zombies will actively attack and kill them, they'll likely be even harder to find). In order to not have to spend forever walking around doing a minigame, you need to find them close to your base, which may not be possible. Or you have to cheat and drop a chicken coop when you find one and put it in there to stop the minigame from happening and then carry them back as inventory afterwards (assuming that actually works since I have no interest in attempting to cheat that way). So you need to find them close if you don't want to walk forever in a minigame where you can't use any vehicle. Since the chances of finding one close are a bit low, you're almost forced to spend a point in the perk to track animals... a perk that I never use and don't want to waste any points in. It might only be one point, but it's a point I don't need or want to spend there. There are plenty of other places to spend points in the early game that are far more useful. Then there is the minigame stress events and I think Kyoji explains the problems with those pretty well.

And then you have the lack of value from it. Relatively low percentage of players (my guess, but I think it's accurate) continue to use eggs after the early game (the first week or less) as they get better food choices. That means getting eggs isn't needed for most players. Feathers are also something that most players aren't going to really need. If you're not using them for arrows, there's little need to keep getting them. And since you can collect your arrows/bolts if you don't lose them, there's normally not much need to make a ton of them unless you don't want to collect them or you use them for horde night and can't collect them before they despawn. The chicken coops don't provide regular meat, which means it doesn't help you with any food recipes other than the new ones. So for it to be useful after the first week, you need to either be someone who always cooks food with eggs (and you'd still have to go get regular meat since the chicken coop doesn't provide that or only make pies/cakes) or you need to be someone who uses a ton of feathers or you need to want to cook the new food items. Otherwise, it's pretty pointless after the first week. If they dropped the "domesticated chicken" output and put regular meat, that would at least make it useful for meat and all your recipe choices that use meat. But even then, meat is hardly difficult to get even if you don't try (I always have tons of meat sitting there and I don't normally go out hunting unless it's end game and I just want to complete the challenges).

Instead, we have a chicken coop that doesn't provide regular meat even though killing a chicken provides regular meat. We have recipes that can't be made with the meat you get from killing a wild chicken even though it's a recipe requiring chicken meat. We have a new kind of meat that is specifically chicken while all other animals provide generic meat. Want bacon and eggs? No need to find a boar... just kill a deer and you can have bacon. Although that's kind of dumb, it's just a way to have all meat be a single item that is used in all recipes. But now we have a special chicken meat that isn't even meat but a living "domesticated chicken" that we're going to cook into chicken recipes while leaving all other meat, including wild chicken meat, as a generic meat that can be used for everything except the new recipes. We have a minigame with stress reactions that are poorly thought out. We have no way to transport a chicken we catch and are stuck walking long distances or else cheating it (assuming that works). We have output from the chicken coop that, for most players, isn't needed after the very early game and just requires you to spend constant resources to feed them to get something you aren't going to need. We have a chicken coop with the red light from the heater that shines through solid blocks if you place it near your base. And we have a chicken coop that looks like this is a Disney game that doesn't fit the with all the other workstations. At this point, why not include a plastic kids play table for the workbench and combiner as well? Or a kids play kitchen for something to hold the campfire? We can use an Easy Bake Oven for cooking. And, no... I don't think that should be done any more than I think the chicken coop should be a playhouse.

And I have a feeling the majority of people who have been asking to raise chickens (have a chicken coop) in the game are going to be very disappointed. For people who want to raise chickens in the game, they would want to SEE the chickens. They would want to have them walking around. There's no value to someone who wants to raise them to just have a decoration that supposedly holds chickens that doesn't show the chickens or allow any interaction with the chickens. So even most of those who wanted this over the years probably aren't going to like the implementation either.

But as I have said before, regardless how bad this was implemented and designed (yes, it's my opinion and you can have your own), it is something that I never have to use in the game since it's pretty useless anyhow, so I don't really care if it's there. That doesn't change that I think it's badly designed, looks horrible and out of place, and is pretty pointless as anything other than a decoration for those who want chickens. It can be there. It can be left looking dumb (maybe someone will be kind enough to make a mod to change the model). It can be left with a poorly designed and thought out minigame. It can be left with no visible chickens or interactions with the chickens. It can be left with not providing real meat that can be used for normal cooking recipes. In the end, it doesn't really matter since I don't need it and won't ever have to put it in my game. Maybe they'll choose to fix it. Maybe not.

Dude...you been playing for a year.....I have seen the ups and down of this game since the beginning....changes in direction, best iterations ever ...that were reversed...4,5 iterations of books, discontinued blocks and content removed for the sake of console players,. So please dont lecture me...1 out of 5 ideas make the game better(sandbox options)
...chicken coops are useless after a certain level, so are apiary stations and combo stations just remove immersive details like building a weapon how you like it. Even armor sets just simplifies clothes and half the time they dont do anything . Now they are adding levels to clothes to make it seem better.. All they do was take the fun out of building and playing the game you want it to be...to a scripted, directional play style they want you to have. Drones are stupid and dont work....Bandits on the other hand have been on the table for years with NOTHING except broken promises. Go back and play from the start and tell me the game wasnt more enjoyable and had more stuff to do. Play a couple of simple mods and see what the game can and should of been. Then come back and rewrite your post.

How do you know this? I'd imagine lots of people would repurpose an existing item rather than create something from scratch.

Are they? There's obviously a bit of RNG as always with the spawn, but chickens seem common enough to me.

Very subjective take. I would argue adding things to the game that makes the more unused perks more useful is a good thing, no? And you are 100% not forced to use the perk.
And then you have the lack of value from it.
So everything they add to the game has to be useful for the entire game? Besides, never know when you may need to just make whatever food you have the resources to make sometimes. Having plenty of eggs can never be a bad thing.

Thanks for the novel, at least you finally provided a useful post of the subject. :)

I haven't been around as long, I came in during A15. While there are some things I wish were still around(weapon parts, vehicle building) today's version is just better. It looks better and plays better. Playing the game you want it to be? There have never been more options to tune it to how you want. You go back and play the old versions if you think they are better. You'll see those few features you miss and then a whole lot of jank. With the combination bench you could kind of argue it is somewhat similar to weapon parts since you can combine the best stats, which really isn't that different from swapping weapons parts. Plus if you turn on weapon degradation, you'll need it to keep your items going, just like you did in older versions, right?

And bandits would have likely released by now if not for the crying fits people threw that got TFP to stop and make 2.5, 2.6, and now 3.0.

Hmm? No, I have played for many years and have now clocked 2,500 hours since. I am very happy with how the game has been developing and in my opinion it gets better and better.

You are of course allowed to be disappointed with a computer game not developing according to your wishes -- and even complain about it publicly :D -- but you are still wrong to claim that the chicken coop is the only added content we get, since they add content quite regularly. And that was what I commented on.

Have you seen a playhouse? They are very small. If you want a bunch of chickens, you need something larger. You can build a low quality chicken coop with scrap in a couple of hours without difficulty. Longer if you want something nicer. How long does it take to modify a playhouse to add the mods to it? How many do you have to find to have room for even a handful of chickens? How much effort are you going to spend trying to get at the eggs inside when it's so small? If you've every dealt with chickens (I have), you'll see that a playhouse would be a horrible option. You would be far better off just using an entryway in a house or even just a room in the house as a chicken coop if you're unwilling to build one. Besides, you're already building everything else, so your character is obviously used to building and not opposed to building. If they didn't want to build stuff, the workbench would be a kitchen table. That would actually make far more sense than a workbench. Sure, you could find a workbench somewhere and bring it with you, but since you are crafting the workbench, it would make sense to repurpose a kitchen table (or any other table) that you find in basically every house rather than trying to find a workbench that wouldn't be in most houses. And it would work just as well. So they already have you crafting something that is completely unnecessary if you just repurpose what you find. Why is the coop any different? Other than that some designer at TFP looked at it and decided it would be "cute" or "funny" to do something with it.

I see chickens occasionally, but certainly not often. And near my base? Depends on the game, but often not... or not within the first week. Remember that we're talking about something that you'd build very early. If you find chickens later, it won't matter unless you keep building more of these. What matters is what you find in the first few days. I didn't say they were rare... just that they are rather uncommon.

If you add things to make use of a perk, you'd add things that make use of that perk for more than a few minutes to find a chicken for your coop and then never need again. That's not enough to warrant using the perk.

No, you don't need to make something useful all game. But you'd at least want something that's useful for more than a handful of days. Sure, you can use eggs all game, but how many people do? I doubt it's more than a couple percent, if that. There are far more useful recipes that don't use eggs and you have the resources to make. Even if you don't want to farm, there are better recipes. Lack of resources is something that normally only occurs in the first few days (or first week if you're not doing much). And yes, you can change settings to reduce loot. But adding something that's only useful for people who use a specific set of game options that are not default isn't really worth it. Now, for those who just want an easy source of eggs in the early game, that's fine. I'm not opposed to having a chicken coop. But to say that it's good to have eggs all game? I think most people just have them sitting around unused after they can make something better than bacon and eggs.

And feel free to be negative all you want. You asked for reasons and I gave them. If you don't want to actually discuss those and just want to provide commentary, then you're not doing anything different from people who are complaining without giving reasons. And yes, I already pointed out most of that in other posts, so "finally" just shows you don't read. I'm certainly not going to list all the issues every time I write something.

Do you have a reason why it's good that the coop doesn't use real meat? Or that you can't make the chicken foods with chickens you kill? Or that you can't carry a chicken in a cage on a vehicle? Or that the minigame stress reactions aren't very good? Or any of the other things I pointed out? Or are you just going to respond by saying "it's fine"?

If you like the implementation and think it's useful, then good for you. Obviously there are those who don't. TFP is good at adding things that are poorly implemented and poorly thought out. It's a common occurrence over the years. They eventually fix most of those. But to fix them, they need people to point out the problems. You don't want them to spend time fixing this, but they should... and they probably will. At least somewhat.

I never said the game doesnt play better.....im saying content has been so streamlined for consoles that it takes away alot of the immersion and type of play that allows you to determine how you play the game.....not this scripted game of going to the traders(items they only sell at a certain level).....which i think is cheating and dont like using...Scavenging and survival was the game....building solar panels, weapons and upgrading your base as YOU see fit...thats playing a game...not being told what you have to find, make and use. Thats how it used to be!!

Well, if you're gonna get a massive coop that has dozens of chickens running around in it, then it would need to constantly be calling in zombies, right? Sense you wanna keep mentioning what make sense and is realistic. I wouldn't want to have to deal with that. With that in mind it makes sense to keep it smaller. Plus, as the POI versions of coops keep being mentioned, I don't want to craft a coop that takes up such massive space.

And it only takes 6 magazines to unlock. I'd imagine that's going to happen with the first week for almost everyone, and quite a bit sooner for people prioritizing it. That's pretty early to me.

I usually see quite a few chickens around the pine forest, but after a few days not so much because I killed them. But now I would need to consider if it's worth killing them or leaving them so maybe I can find them once I have a coop. I'd call that a win as well.

Just because you get a few chickens doesn't then make the perk useless. But I'm not gonna argue that as I've seen from your posts you play a certain way and seem to consider anything outside that a waste. You keep making a lot of assumptions on how people play the game, starting to sound like Gramps and his PVP claims.

I'm not being negative, just trying to get you whiners to actually provide useful feedback for the game, is all. That helps everyone a lot more that just repeating the same spew over and over. You are the ones coming in as if the sky is falling over a chicken coop and nonstop whining about it. I'd call that being negative.

I was fine without the apiary, would've been fine without the coop. I wasn't in the group wanting these things. I look at them as a bonus, basically. But then some people seem to think if the coop stays as is the game is ruined or something. Overreactions, as always.

I think with 3.1 there are very few items you can only get from a trader. And with the settings you can completely edit what they sell, or turn it off altogether. Have you even played 3.0 yet? It seems not.
