As I was standing there in the middle of my foundation zombies would only spawn outside of the foundation....so I thought to myself...if I were to lay down a foundation across the entire map...there would be no more zombies. Maybe there should be a code that if one were to do that...radiated zombies would rain down from the sky. That would be justice.
Heh heh, good luck with that.
I used to built elaborate, and multi-level, multi-building bases, back before I learned the limits of the zombie pathing/spawn in options. Early game, building a 71 X 71 base was far to much effort, took way to much time, and when I (finally) got a decent "Fortress of Solitude" built up and running, my Horde night fun fell off the grid.
Why?
Because, once I finally built a base that could (and did) force them to come at me from one direction only, Horde night broke.
I still fight the same way, with hand held melee weapons and tools, and reserve bows/crossbows for the 4 legged friends that just eat me otherwise, and I do it down on the ground, preferably a road, as they are mostly flat enough that I can run around and not have my aim thrown off, by myself and/or the zombies steppin up/down.
Once I had built my base, I learned that the zombies are coded to just spawn in in all directions, and those that cannot reach me/path to the opening in my outer walls, are just going to suck up my computer's resources and waste my time, standing outside, beating mindlessly on the outer walls.
Instead, we need Horde night to have a separate spawn-in process.
Logically, if a Zed spawns in, and cannot reach the player, they need to despawn and then respawn, in a way/location/direction, that the other zombies are coming in from. that do path to the player successfully. In this example, the player wants to fight the zombies, and doesn't want to have to leave their base/land claim, to go outside and pick off the stragglers. The whole point of Horde Night, is a relentless, sustained, and uninterrupted flow of zombies, all night long. It is the MAIN EVENT, and the reason to build a base in the first place.
In explanation, picture a base like a block letter 'C'. Now picture the zombies spawning in from all 8 points of the compass.
Premis, any zombies that spawned in from the NE, E, and SE, should have the pathing to enter the base from the open side (on/in the East), all other zombies, using the other 5 points of the compass, do not have the pathing to reach the player. These need to despawn, and lock out further zombies spawning in those 5 directions. This change to spawning in and pathing to the player will make it possible to concentrate all zombies, in the directions that the zombies can easily path to the player, and achieve the desired outcome, namely, an uninterrupted sustained flow of zombies.
We need this programming change, otherwise, we are left with one of two lesser choices:
1) The zombies continue to spawn in all directions, and are useless at achieving a sustained rush against the player, or, even worse
2) The programmers just keep dumping zombies outside, but turn up their block damage, so they can keep using the same (broken) spawn in/pathing code they currently have/use.
With the advent of v2.0, and these as yet unseen "Red zombies", we see the signs of the game going off the rails, and the programmers taking the lazy (and game breaking) way out.
I personally don't want to waste time building a big, impressive base, only to then have an excessive job of repairing said base, after Horde Night, and zombies that are set to "Blast" their way way through my buildings/defenses, rather than, just spawning in, from directions where they don't have to deal with my defenses, and can just walk in and attack me, if they just spawn in, in the above example, from the east, and north/south of east.
It all comes down to, are we going to have a fun and enjoyable Horde Night, and no huge amounts of damage control afterwards (which takes time and fun away from the game), or are we going to have a failed game on our hands, one in which, the zombies just endlessly/mindlessly, try to smash through a players defenses, and force the player to spend inordinate time upon repairs/rebuilding their base?
