PC Can clients on experimental play with servers in stable?

Hello,

Apologies if this has been asked before, but I couldn't find much info on this.

The MP games that I play in are still on Alpha 20.0 stable, but I'd still like to try out experimental 20.1 in a SP save. If I switch to experimental, would I be able to join the stable games? (one of them is a dedicated server and the other is not, don't know if that makes a difference). Or would I have to roll back to stable? Follow up question regarding rolling back, would I have to delete/clear anything like saves if I were to switch from experimental to the old stable?

You can make a copy of the game to keep multiple versions; probably better to make the copy of the stable, since you might want to have the EXP updated. You'll have to run it from the exe of course, but it should work. There's always a chance of cross-corrupting stuff when doing such things, so, remember backups and whatnot.

The answer to this question is "no", hence theFlu's recommendation to keep a copy of 20.0 executables and run from that when you join your MP games. Play 20.1 exp from your Steam location.

Thank you both! I didn't even consider the possibility of having multiple versions of the same game. I will look into it some more.

EDIT: it appears 20.1 has gone stable, so I may not need to do this yet :)
