PC Best poi's to take over for bases? Also need some base building advice.

What are some of the better poi's to take over to build a base on or in? Any idea what the demolishers explosion radius is? Any general base building tips. I usually don't build them but I am trying to this game and I built a tower, I plan to surround with double stacked iron bars. Wanna make sure its far enough out demolisher explosions won't hit the base.

 
I havent played until hard bloodmoons in a18 yet, but I guess a17 tips are still valid.

What I did in my last a17 game was I started in a POI with room besides it. Defended the first 2 hordes there and meanwhile build a base pretty close to the building. The base was a typical fortress. The added benefit was that I made a path from the top of my fortress to the old POI which was still fortified for the first 2 bloodmoons. So, in case if the zombies starting to cause heavy damage on my fortress, I just crossed to the POI and continue defending there. It also gave me a better angle for shooting sometimes.

It was similar to creating several towers in your fortress, but with the benefit of starting with one ready to use from the start.

About good POIs, Ive heard the firestation is awesome, but I only use POIS for the first 1 or 2 bloodmoons, so Im not an expert. I just search one with a usefull roof. In my actual game I took one with half blocks as roof and it's terrible. Everything looks like it's floating.

I had fun with pinacle ones, like lighthouse, water towers, broadcast towers and such. Not saying they are good, but its fun to build around them and shoot from there, even more if it's just temporary like in my case.

 
Modern looking fire house has walls that are 10,000 hp and a gorgeous bulletproof glass area (you just need to make a floor).

The Paper Mill is also sturdy and has the benefit of a huge cache of paper in the cellar, more than you'll ever need for shotguns, or you can sell it for loot.

I often will find the collapsed 5-story building and make my base at the top. I think it's high up enough that zombies don't hear you even if you're tinkering.

All of these are predicated on the fact that I build a separate 4x4x7 fighting tower for horde night.

 
I always loved the ranger station. 8 blocks of flagstone, and you have the floor area blocked off. upper has balcony.

By the time you take out the wood on the ground, and dig your 1 deep trench, you should have enough to add the 2 more rows of flagstone, and be able to upgrade that to the next level.

Then again, that's just to handle wandering zeds. For the day 7 horde, I just find a BIG rock, put a platform on it, a few rows of spikes and fight from there.

 
There's two kinds of partially destroyed banks - a larger one and then a smaller one. I usually pick the smaller one that has a staircase going up the center. I generally put an entrance on the second floor that can be reached by a ramp, clean out the bottom, block the stairs and put down spikes as there are plenty of natural vantage points to fire down on the zombies.

Pros:

Concrete walls below and mostly above

Already build in access points for the zombies

*Easy to clean out and modify

Small foot print, making it easier to defend early game

Easy to put up a small rooftop garden and expand it later

Cons:

*If you want to take out the stairs or do heavy modifications early on, the concrete can be a real PITA to take out

Expanding can be difficult if too close to other buildings

In A18 it's no longer as easy to repair now that the concrete bags give cement instead of the concrete mix

Overall, it's been my favorite POI to take over because you can do so much with it even in the beginning. That said, I have not yet had to deal with demolishers. So, it's going to be interesting to see if my 'fav' will in fact hold up.

 
Best one is hands down the ranger station. Fill in the bottom floor, upgrade to concrete, and horde will literally never get in your base.

The ranger station is one of my favourites too. If your idea of a base is a multi-story square block with a ledge around it then 90% of that is already there.

I've tried the fire station, and the main problem is that it takes a lot of effort to convert it. Those 10,000hp walls aren't very conducive to re-modelling work.

 
I posted it in the last POI thread, but nobody seemed to react to it much...Aldo's Cabinets makes a great base.

The wood stairs are easy to chop out. Add a jump ramp to the veranda roof and within 5 minutes you have a base that will easily survive the first few hordes even if you don't actively defend it, thanks to the cobblestone walls. The show room in front makes a perfect shooting gallery if you break out the skylights. Adding iron bars makes the shooting gallery even more effective. The structural integrity is really excellent as the Zeds would have to take out nearly every wall and column to bring the place down. There's also a chance of a functional table saw inside, which is nice.

The 2nd floor storeroom has plenty of space for workstations and storage and if you don't need the table saw downstairs you can fill the whole back room in with blocks for truly insane stability.

The location is Navezgane is pretty nice too as it's right down the road from Trader Joel and not far from Trader Rekt. The Bear's Den across the street also offers the possibility of a working chem station.

 
I typically have a base for living and another for fighting. Day 1 I normally find a building like shamway, crack-a-book, buzzes bar, or pop-in-pills with a large roof and ladder in the back. I clear it, break off the bottom two ladder sections and set up on top of the roof. Plenty of space and room to organize - plus you can see what is going on around you...

AmIGone funeral home used to be my favorite, but it was redone in the new patch and isn’t that good anymore.

When the demolisher starting to show up, it might be time to consider fallback bases. Not just because of the explotion, it also does high damage against blocks with just the fists.

Personally, i'd prefer the firestations since it has vending machines, a large hall usable for building anti-zombie contraptions inside , and not beeing too vulnerable to vultures. But my goal is always a selfbuild base with good enough defenses to survive hordes.

Heh, we use Aldo's for our horde night base until our living base is up and fully defended. The ranger station just down the road on that nice wide flat space is where we make the real base, so it's also very doable going between Joel and Rekt, and later when we have cars adding Jen to the mix.

We don't even really fortify Aldo's, just knock out some roof blocks and put in bars so we can shoot down, put wooden bars around the ouside of the roof and there's your ballgame.

 
First off, some amazingly good answers above, all really good stuff.

The fun thing is even a small shack can be a base. I really like the fire stations due to the strong walls. In previous alphas I used the original gas station poi a lot.

But it's fun to try many different poi's, even one of those burnt out houses, fix it all up. And in different biomes.

Agreed. One of my favorite things to is to use an original structure and design defenses that fit it.

 
I always use a small house next to the trader .

My tiny home must have 2 floors so i have a save space.

For fighting hordenight i always search for a building with good walls and a flat roof - there i build an extra roof against vulture attacks. I pre

 
I love the trailer park as an early base. One of the trailers is steel with 10k health blocks. I put a few pillar with wood bars laid flat and fight the first few hordes no problem. Just put some spikes around the trailers and kite them around.
