i'm not that into modding 7dtd so i'm not sure how difficult it would be to re-implement the weather system but it would be nice to have it available to be back as a mod, and/or having the badges be replaced by something more immersive eg: mask filters that mechanically work exactly the same as the badges unless nothing is worn in the mask/face slot (in which case it just doesn't activate and you take the normal biome damage)
