PC B221 gated steel is ridiculous and unnecessary

In RWG you can find them in the wasteland.
They look like what you'd find at the top of an electrical pole.

Sometimes you'll also find them in junkyards or the backyard of a Gas station lying on the ground,
I think those are supposed to be the rear axle of a car, at least the ones that I've found in Pass N Gas and in a room on the ground floor of one of the ruined 5 storey buildings. Whatever they are supposed to be, they do give forged iron and steel and mechanical parts when harvested.

And, of course, traders often sell forged steel.

Oh just found another one.
Motorcycle is craftable at level 50.

HAHA! GOTCHA! you can't make it until level 60! FOOLED YOU!

Even with traders, you're unlikely to get the 36 forged steel you need to make it unless you've been religiously hitting up several traders thru several different restocks.
True!

They should raise the level requirement for the motorbike to 60 then.

I think those are supposed to be the rear axle of a car, ...
And they are found at the top of poles?

Also... they are called:

<block name="poleTop01">
in the XML.....

... but if you're sure.

Just raise everything to 100 and then have all perks available at the same time, that will definitely extend the early game!

All joking aside, I won't complain about things anymore until they do their balancing. The new system is here to stay, nothing any of TFPs have said would indicate they have any intention of reverting, listening to feedback, or budging on any matter. So at this point I'm just playing, seeing what I like and don't like, and waiting to see the "balances" in stable. Every topic has voices on each side, and they should because it's all player opinion, but the path is set and now it's time to see where it leads.

Yeah well said.

At least TFP have come forward saying they are actively looking for feedback to help balance.

So that means they aren't happy with how it's working at the moment either.... sorta.

We'll see.

Another month will make all the difference.

I'm ok with the steel tools being lvl 60. But ffs make it so we can craft wrenches with forged iron please.

YES!

This makes complete sense with the current system!!!!

Forged Steel was fine for A16 but this is a whole new game.

+1 for this!

Honestly I see why some people are frustrated but guys, this is in alpha. The point is for them to test a bunch of stuff and see how it sticks. There's no reason to assume they're gonna keep it this way and even if they do, we're fortunate enough to have a relatively active modding community here, and they will fix it if TFP decides for some reason not to adjust (they will though).

Nowhere in any of my posts on this have I even hinted that I expect them to keep it like this and that it's the end of the world.

I'm providing feedback in regards to a change in the last build - possibly a change that they didn't consider all of the effects of.

Due to the presence of several recipes that use a significant amount of steel, one can assume you're expected to be able to acquire that amount of steel by or at the level those perks unlock, otherwise, why have them unlock there? To a lesser degree of clarity, the steel tools/weapons you can acquire thru trader quests, trading, or rarely, loot imply the same thing, though I can certainly see them simply deciding those are fine as-is.

With this in mind they NEED to change the game in one of two ways:

1) make the necessary changes to make the level 40 and 50 recipes that use a large amount of steel consistently craftable at the level they're unlocked...if I unlocked the perk thru the level gate, I should be able to make it...its not the case of finding a given item - that can be done at any level. The perks should be the point at which you can CONSISTENTLY do something (make them use a metal that can be crafted at those levels, whether iron, reverting the steel gate, or even inventing a whole new resource)

2) move the level 40 and 50 recipes to level 60+ if they don't want them crafted before you get access to steel (this will likely require reworking the yeah! science perk in its entirety).

Because the current system dangles a reward in front of you and implies that once you spend that perk, you get consistent access to that recipe, when that is not the case anymore.

THIS is the time to speak up about it. NOW, when B221 is fresh and they're just now starting to work on balancing and bugs present in the new build. There is no better time to talk about it.

Well said, good feedback.

Pretty sure this is the very reason we are here. Giving feedback.

Are you certain that the crucible is locked behind Hammer and Forge rank 3, or is just locked behind the workbench?
Honest question.
Umm in b208, you cannot craft a cruicble until u had hammer and forge rank 3 afaik. It always showed the workbench symbol beside it for me that didn't light up till I got the steel perk in hammer and forge level 3. So I don't know what stuff the OP is smoking.

Also, I often find traders with stacks of 60-100 forged steel you can buy, so I don't see what hes crying about. You don't need a ton of steel to repair things, 20 steel for repairs would last a VERY long time.

By the time I reach level 50 certainly, wrenches are a major source of...scrap. They are crazy-common in every play-through I've done since A17e. I think it's the splotches of Burnt Forest everywhere....so many sinks. They're almost all brown or orange, but I just don't burn through them quick enough to worry about repairs.

The steel I just buy. In my current game I can only find 1 trader, and I've gotten enough to keep my orange steel shovel in tip-top shape. I was searching for the telephone pole tops yesterday, and was wondering....

I'm almost sure there were other sources (nothing common if I recall) were you might get steel. Does anyone know of any of these?

I was able to make a crucible and forge steel in b208 when I was able to make a workbench iirc. Almost positive. I would have to watch one of my vods to confirm. But I am certain I could forge steel before I could craft steel tools in b208.

Intersting, Maybe I just never noticed then, As I was pretty sure I didn't see it light up till I had that perk, but it may have been I just never noticed.

I've gotten forged steel out of those lootable cars on the roads as well a few times, so add those to the list. Its extremly rare though.

No worries, I was shocked a week or so ago when my buddy told me in game he was forging steel right after making the wokrbench. I didn't say anything and left. He asked where I was going. I said to go get 2400 stone and some clay lmao, I'M MAKING 2 CRUCIBLES! lol.
