Archery enhancement: Deal damage pulling arrows out of live enemies

An idea to slightly improve the damage-dealing potential of archery, is make it so pulling an arrow out of a live enemy deals an extra bit of damage.
Isn't the idea of archery to avoid being in melee range? :)

But as far as the idea, let me ask this.... If you are using a bow and put an arrow into a zombie and they reach you without dying from other arrows you might shoot at them while they are coming for you, and you can do an extra 20 damage by pulling out the arrow (that's probably high, but let's use that for this question). Would you spend the time to pull out that arrow for 20 damage or switch to a melee weapon that will do 40-80 damage, depending on the weapon? And that would be one arrow, so one "attack" by pulling it out. If you had more than one in the zombie, then you could repeat it X times, but only if they had multiple arrows in them. After the arrows are out, you're stuck with switching to a melee weapon anyhow unless you want to do point blank archery attacks.

It is an interesting idea. I'm just not sure if anyone would use it other than to try it out once or twice or just to goof around. Can you think of a reason why people would want to use it if there are other options that do more damage?

Unless the mechanics are significantly changed, both. Tap F while clicking the face.
Right. It's just a press of a button. But it's a choice. Use an attack for full damage or pull an arrow for a small amount of damage. You won't be able to do both at the same time. So I asked if the OP would actually use it instead of using a melee attack.

You are, though?
You think that if they add the ability to pull an arrow out to do extra damage that you will be allowed to pull and arrow and swing a sledgehammer or whatever at the same time? How would that animation work? Sure, they could allow it, but I really doubt that they would because that would not make any sense. I guess they could leave it as it is and just add damage, but it seems like a bad choice if they add damage to it.

The editing of the animations is not in the proposal; if you want to propose that, do so first, and then argue the merits. I'll count that as a proposal, this time.

If they are to edit the animations to prevent, and thus replace, a machete swing, the damage can freely be made similar to a machete hit. That might actually feel awesome. Since it would be a trade-off, it could be really powerful. Especially if the hit location was kept, so a head shot arrow would cause headshot machete damage on removal.

So, your counterargument seems actually an argument for making it really powerful, to me ;)

I don’t think there is an animation for recovering arrows. They just vacuum up to your inventory. I’ll have to try it next time I play but I think you might be able to do both things at once and the animation would simply be swinging your weapon.

This would be assuming that there's no special animation, the same as now. I could see limiting the damage to a small amount with possibly some bleed given that it's instantaneous

Mainly I just find it mildly disappointing when I do get the opportunity to pull an arrow out of a live zombie, that it doesn't do anything. It's not terribly often, but occasionally you do put a couple arrows into a zombie that is now closing in on you, or you have it knocked down or something.

You get your arrows back which you can either shoot back into that same zombie or another target. You are getting something from it.

We already get arrow perks from the Rangers Guide to Archery - leg shots slow the target, greater chance for knockdown with stealth attacks.

And if you also perk into Agility Mastery, you get bleeding affects added to bows and bypassing armor to deal full damage plus an additional 25%.

But I got to ask - Would this be useless against zombies..since they are technically not live enemies?

I'd rather a perk or a mod that lets you launch 2 arrows/bolts at the same time lol. With a slight damage reduction to each arrow/bolt. But yes, even if it was 5 damage from vaccuming up the arrows that would be cool.

Since we're dreaming here, how about making the stuck arrows work as a handle and allow for tripping the zed? Simple ragdoll. Would work for regaining range, somewhat fitting the archer playstyle.

Of course would be reasonable to think of it as a secondary attack, but if we get those, a kick / shove / trip would be a thing on its own.
