anyway to lower the fuel burn rate of the generator?

Look in the Blocks XML for block id="2001" name="generatorbank"

As I have never done this I am guessing you will want to increase the <property name="OutputPerFuel" value="11250"/>

 
Idk, what you have hooked up to your generator, but if you don't want to do the xml edit Perramas suggested, I know you can save loads of fuel by putting motion sensors before turrets for example. I've seen setups with 20+ turrets stay up and running for several real days on one filled tank.
