Anybody else avoiding the desert biome because of catching disease from the plague spitters?

Prior versions I kept a small basic platform base right outside each trader.
That's kinda what I meant with the campfire; my "winter base" is a line of boxes and workbenches across the road from Hugh. The only time I'm remotely concerned about the yetis is when I'm standing next to my campfire; it'll be annoying to rebuild after it gets one-shot by a boulder ..

I think you just have to plan your base around whatever enemies you will face. If you are in the snowy forest, do something you normally wouldn't that will protect from them throwing boulders at your stuff. Maybe a wall around the base a little ways out. They only throw boulders off they are close enough to you, so keep them far enough from where you have stuff that you don't want to be hit. That's just one option; there are many others. I think just planning ahead will make them no more of a problem than any other zombies.

I thought horde was purely tied to gamestage, not biome. So the spitters and yeti could show in the forest. Or am I mistaken? I haven't gotten them yet and I haven't looked through the xml really, other than to fix some of my mods.

Fear not, they're not. Their boulders aren't heat seeking and only really threaten the campfire you're cooking at. And while they feel like they have 100% pain resistance, they don't have tanky health so they die pretty easy.
I encountered a couple orange ones (infernal?) in a T5 POI. They had about as much health as a dire wolf, so they were slightly tanky.

But that doesn't really count towards "settling in the biome"; I don't know if infernals will be a biome spawn at some stage, but likely not when getting there. But yeah, those could be quite a bit tankier, althou I just ended 2 dires and a z-bear with one mag for fun - I don't know if I count those as tanky anymore either :)

Yes, horde night includes them. I was referring to the comment about dealing with the frostclaws with a base in the snowy forest.

Well, I wasn't meaning to imply they were difficult. I just had to stab them 4 or 5 times instead of 1 or 2.

Was just pointing out they could, eventually, be semi-tanky.

No. They are a pain early on, but i really don´t wanna have to look for ages to kill 10 of them for the biome badge. And a bit later on, they are no issue anymore.

The main problem here is that people are so used to get into the desert very early in the game and they still try to rush it with V2. But that´s exactly what this mechanic tries to stop. So it works like intended. You get rekt by the spitters? You probably went to the desert too early.

This. I had to use 3 smoothies to find all my spitters, iron arrow to the face, rush in and stab with my knife, bonus if they spit because my knife kills the bees that come out.

I used about 5 vitamins the first time I met spitters in the desert. Yes you can learn and adjust. But they would keep me from building a base there if they spawn more frequently in desert biome horde nights as opposed to other biomes' horde nights. OTOH I had a spitter in forest on, I think, Day 28 horde night . . . got infected but did not need a vitamin.
