So I tried A18.2 with it set to Ultra, but ALSO using sphereii's microsplat disable mod.
Still getting 150-155 FPS.

Soooo... do we wanna talk about how microsplat is a massive performance hog, doesn't really actually help in terms of visual fidelity and just screws up folks wanting to add the old farming back AND adding custom biomes? ;)
Just look at the underground ore textures. There is a significant difference, with sphereii's microsplat disable mod. That is why i dont use it.

Still unacceptable, that i am loosing half of my FPS, if i look at my feet in the middle of a forest with a GTX1070...

Never noticed an issue with the underground ores and the microsplat off.

Did you disable texture streaming? Cos that's a bugger for turning itself on.

There was never a doubt that the microsplat was the problem. Everything looks gorgeous, so it's a price to pay. I'm getting massive gains since I lowered the terrain in my potato. A solid overall 40%.

Now we need to wait and see if Unity gets off his ass and allows devs to fine tune the terrain to fully unload it when not it use.

well, Performance in 18.2 (5) still awful and unplayable if i turn on AF to anything higher than medium.
great new terrain quality slider is like max 10% performance difference between lowest and ultra, AF on (16) or off still 100% difference.. great.
If AF settings make a big difference, then it is a sure sign that you are running out of VRAM, because AF sampling gets very slow if accessing textures from system RAM. The best solution for that is setting Texture Quality to Half or lower. Reducing screen resolution would also lower VRAM use.

Edit:

Slow AF could also be older GPUs not running it very fast.

Same here with 6gb vram (GTX 1060 @1680x1050).

AF settings making the big difference, the new terrain settings only when set to low (but I want at least medium ;)

The texture budget is maxed out at 4096 - could this be a problem, maybe?

In the version of Unity we are using 4096 is the cap for texture budget, which might be limiting us. Another reason I want to get us on Unity 2019.3 when it leaves beta.

My eyes are absolutely fine, thank you.
You could just admit it was a poor decision. :p

And the assumption no-one wants the old farming is also incorrect. SOME people don't. SOME people prefer the new. SOME prefer the old.

It also completely breaks adding further biomes for modders due to the topsoil replacement nonsense... but that's getting out of scope.
One look at the 18 terrain had people in awe, so yeah you need your eyes checked if you think it looked as good as 18's terrain.

It was a great decision we are standing by, the terrain looks great and we have some low quality options coming that still probably will look better than the 17 terrain did but run as good.

We made our decisions about farming and its off topic, as well as mods.

On A18.2 b5 you can also try this test to see FPS terrain could reach with a very simple shader.

Console: gfx key game_terraintest 1

You will need to set Terrain Quality to Medium or higher or the simplified shader will override the test shader.

I got that part, but the part of when the thirst/hunger warning comes is what feels off. I'm now getting the thirsty warning when I'm at 106 water. If the increased food/water per level is supposed to be a boon of getting better, shouldn't the warning come still at around 50 or less (value, not percent)?
Your body changed through adaptation. I used to eat 2000 calories a day when I was 160 pounds. Now at 215 I eat 4500 calories. So yeah after eating 2k calories where I used to be stuffed, now I would be starving on 2k. You have more stamina, so you have to pay the price in calories. Its a % of the bar, not any set value.

tested. That shader is veeeery simple - all terrain is simply white now but amazing fast :biggrin-new:

Waiting for Unity 2019.3 :)

Don't get me wrong, I agree With most of that statement, And while you are right only larger things (like shopping carts and the metal bars, piles of cinderblocks, broken washing machines, car skeletons etc in the wasteland) Really stop vehicles, The problem is in the wasteland those things are every inch of the terrain. I guess it'll be less of a problem as roads get better but I don't want to have to spend days and days of in game time breaking cinderblocks to have a clear path. or even a path at all to a location. In game, my bike and motorcycle are treated like solid gold, like they would be in an actual apocalypse but if I go anywhere near a wasteland i literally cannot avoid hitting things constantly. Which right now is a bit annoying but fine, but if those impacts can cause breakdowns it's going to start to become more frustrating than exciting because they may happen constantly. And I know I'm not the only one who has that problem in that specific biome. Honestly I'd love to see the wasteland be just a little nicer but everywhere else be a little harder to drive in.

What I guess i'm trying to say is that avoiding the obstacles needs to be a viable option and right now with the clutter of the wasteland biomes it really feels like it's not.

No, I don't. The fact of the matter is most players will boot up a game and go "Oh look how pretty the stuff in the distance is!" and that's it. After that, they don't care because it's just background. It's not in the fore-front where all the action is. And that's why I don't notice it. We're playing an FPS game where what's in front of you matters more than the pretty stuff at the back.

And THAT is why it's an unacceptable performance loss.

As for the other stuff, okay, you made a decision. Good for you. It's still wrong, especially when you outright said folks COULD mod the farming back in when there were complaints about the hoe being removed.

Fact of the matter is, no it can't with microsplat because it always changes the ground to whatever the topsoil of the biome is, so you have no idea if it's been hoe'd or not.

I would stop being stubborn on features you add/remove for once... just once... please. Because you're turning a game with a lot of promise into a looter/shooter, which i'm pretty sure most players did NOT sign up for when they saw "survival crafting game."

I was one that did not like the news of how farming had changed. did not like it at all. Now that I have played and got used to the new farming...I gotta say I like it better than the old way. I honestly did not think I would like it but...TFP did there magic again. This is the second time i really had lots of doubts about a feature or change that I was sure I was going to hate, but it all worked out..... we will see if they can pull off bandits though..still have doubts about it.. lol :)

I finally gathered enough steel to make a tier 3 m60, I was so happy! And then when I went to make it I realised because I'd upped my skill in machine guns I actually couldn't afford to make an m60 because now I can only make tier 4 machine guns... and the tier 4 m60 cost 30 more steel than the tier 3.

Can we have tier crafting options please? I'd rather have a tier 3 m60 than no m60 at all...

Just a question for TFP team:

Are you actually using microsplats correctly?

Watching this video

Something just seems really off about how you are currently using them, especially when trying to add custom biomes back into the game.

Why are the splats affecting the biomes so drastically when they shouldn't?

a common problem on servers is one person doing a POI Quest and someone else walking in and looting the place while you are doing the quest. is there a way to lock the quest to the player or party until success of fail?

Isn't that why you play PvP? Or PvE with strangers? For the unexpected interaction, the uncertainty of friend or foe?
