PC ability to Dig down for zombies. WHY

I watched a stream last night, (cant remember who's lol) and for their first blood moon night they dug about 15 blocks down and above the ground they had roughly a 1ox10 area with spikes and barbed wire placed. Where they were underground was a little bit off to where they placed their defense..... and they dug straight down and were in their tunnel before the timer hit 23.30. That's fricken quick and somehow they survived, but they totally ignored the path to get into the tunnel in the first place. they just went "ok they are here under ground and dug directly down and nearly dropped on their heads. Pathing has changed, these Streamers (there were 4 of them in one group) were obviously new to the game or they were more into the testing of the new ways the Zombies react, but it looks a ♥♥♥♥ load harder than it has in previous Alpha's.

The only problem is that bunkers and underground bases are near useless, cause the main point was to hide your base from the hostile players... Well it looks like we gona do tower building simulator :D

About the realism - that is other story... By this logic how my character can carry 10 000 buckets with concreate and etc... ?

In my opinion, zombies shouldn't dig more than let's say 4-5 blocks, instead they should follow the path the player takes to get underground.

There's no point of setting up traps on such paths, if zombies can brake into your underground bunker anywhere.

They should knock on your underground vault door, trying to brake in. They should not come out of a random concrete block above your bookshelf.

Have any of the streamers actually tested having an underground base all the way down at the bedrock level? In most areas it's around 50 blocks down, isn't it? I somehow doubt the z's can detect players through all that, since the detection range above ground isn't that high.
It's not only the detection range that make the z's detect a player in his base.

There is a also the heat map and at horde night it is the bed that makes the zombie know where you are.

That is zombie weakness #1, predictability.

Everything is simple: devs wanted to challenge us, and they failed to do that during some game moments before. Now they did what they wanted from the beginning.

Stop crying. However, I see a possible option to turn off digging in difficulty setting. But I guess 90% of servers would turn digging on anyway.

Digging is not such problem, it will actually will force us to play more actively... But in PVP servers, underground bases will be near useless, since their best protection is the concealment... Anyway we will have time to test when alpha is out.

Devs stated for many times, that the main current focus is on PvE.

As for forcing us to play more actively - you can interpret in this way any challenge :) . A superhorde force you to play more actively, less food makes you to play more actively, etc. I think that "more challenge" is more precise description in this case.

Everyone talks about the effect that digging will have on underground bases, but from the streams so far we've seen another (unintended?) side-effect from it.

When you are exploring a POI and you make noise, the zombies on the floors above you will "dig" through the ceiling and drop down into the room you're in.

this is fantastic :) form the changelog AI improvements are fantastic, it is exactly what I wanted to see for years.

Yes I love this change 1000% better. I have already seen streamers get wrecked over it. I love it cant wait to stair at a ceiling and pray that it doesn't collapse with 5 zombies falling on my head. GG Pimps.

Just like in every zombie movie that was not ever made. How does a zombie go about digging through a concrete floor or any floor? Does it get down on all fours? Does it jump up and down? Does it gnaw at the rug?

Dropping through an already-damaged floor....yes, that's pathfinding, busting a direct path to you?...that's a monster-truck with heat-seeking missiles and GPS....a magic zombie. Were their damage relative to landscape realistic, this would be amusing. I'd be taking my time disassembling a vault while listening to the zombies upstairs scuffling and pounding against the carpet upstairs. The stairs only 5 feet from where they're standing with the smell of my brains wafting up to show the exact path to my skull.

If this is true, it's less advanced pathfinding.

I know....I shouldn't female dog until I've tried it.

I love how all of the carebears are whining that they FINALLY made zombies able to dig down.... Now you wont be able to dig a hole and hide in it during 7 day hordes. I feel like people who do this really dont want to play a zombie game and/or survive with any challenge involved, well there is minecraft if you want to just mine, dig and build without much challenge.

No dude, we want to play a survival base-building game and not an action FPS.

Good point...and for those arcade children who enjoy non-stop shooting without a need for an ounce of imagination, may I suggest Robotron?

It even keeps score!

its really not a big deal

Just adapt your building designs to take it into account, I already thought of at least 3 ways to combat it.

Im an above grounder myself and prob will always be but surely if it was that much of a problem you could just put a giant sheet of concrete on the surface? as long as youre fairly in the center (but deep down obviously), that way they wont pathfind around it (because they have to come to you primarily? and route secondary?), and if they did just keep extending the sheet or hit a few of the concrete blocks in the middle to lower the hps so they pathfind to that instead of the edges(which im guessing would be dirt), then repair after horde night which would be the only problem night.

Better yet have an above ground base just for hordes? job done? You'd need to try this stuff out ofc im only speculating.

A recent comment on the ark forum relates to this because you can now transport big dinos into caves that you could not before, much like a pokeball, and people that used to be safe in them were moaning.

One response was priceless." Us people on the top/in the open have had to always deal with it, now its your turn to take it up the dodo like the rest of us " :02.47-tranquillity: lol

im sorry lizzyroo but its your time to take it up the dodo. xD

failing all that bs im sure you and the many others that are fans of underground will find a way. Good Luck ^^

it's a stupid change that will be fun to play with. Hmmm... they jump across? 10 blocks wide moat it is! They dig down? Just go down 100 blocks!
