PC A17 Mining

We are having the same problem. Started a mine in a random place, have been digging forever, and have not hit anything! Very frustrating considering all the materials we need and how slow and stamina draining everything is.
Wonderful news! Does this mean the developers finally nerfed the mining exploit? Very exciting, and glad to hear this.

I don't know if its a bug or my computer, but all ore looks the same. I can't tell the difference between nitrate, iron, lead or coal, except by the different sounds they make when being mined.
I also don't really mind the rock indicator, but the rocks all look the same to.

Glad I'm not the only one. Found only a few blocks of iron/lead, and it was completely by accident since it looked like stone. Found what I thought looked like nitrate, but that was stone too

If your looking for iron , you can always mine those Ibeams for scrap iron in the wastelands, I got 1300 scrap iron in about 15 mins or so.

Found this in another post:

... And il share why :
<HEAVY SNIP>

--Base 3 : Underground hideout--

Wait....what underground hideout....every time I tried to mine the ground caved in on me....

Base effectiveness grade : -7/10 (RIP mining)

<Extreme Snip>
Interesting!!!

The new ore blocks are hard to find, apparently there are only two different textures for them now. This is a line copied from the alpha 17 patch notes.

``Ores only use 2 textures now, regular and shiny``

I'm curious about those collapses.I haven't had one yet and I'd like to avoid one.

How far apart are your support columns?
I had some just doing the initial build out. Sand.

But with A17 changes - isn't mining going to be a thing of the past - especially for single players? I mean you got zed's that dig... Would be way too dangerous if you don't have auto turrets of some or some type of trap system above you...
I dug into the side of the mountain about 15 blocks up. In about 10 blocks then down about 6 then back 10 and my base begins.

I mine and forge all night and haven't even heard a zed. Not gonna stay there for the horde but underground works fine for regular nights.

Mining and digging without collapse should still be well possible without risk even in lose ground just like in a16. As long as you support the layer above there is no problem. What I did in a16 if I wanted to dig under a surface fortress without any risk of collapse was to add wood plate to one side of the corridor I was digging. Wood plate is still available from start in a17 if I remember correctly. Just use that when ever you dig and you have no problem with support and can always pass through. Just make sure you have wood plate or pillar in each block column that you're digging out.

Anyone get attacked while mining underground?

In A16, I would mine all the way down to -57 and then start tunneling around at -40 to -57 to find veins. In my current game, my base was already at +40 ground level and there was not much hope of going down 90-some meters with a stone axe and shovel. Happily, I struck iron and lead at only +20 or so. I haven't gotten around to looking for anything else just yet. And as to weapons, I've re-discovered the joys of using a club to bash a Zs brains in.

yeah i did, didn't notice it was a bm and was digging a way, they cam right down onto my head, i was at bedrock . man they did fast. one thing im finding is the auger either is using to much gas or isn't doing much damage to stone i used 5 barrel (3000 gas) in no time at all. don't mind the auger ware and needing repair as it stays the same level.

Bedrock is at +3 now.................

Maybe i'm just blind (or terribly unlucky), but i'm not finding anything. I've checked around the larger and smaller boulders, dug down and found nothing. Perhaps it was different on consoles?

Any pointers? :)

I did some calculations in A14 and they are still valid today.

According to the SI ratings for stone, if you have a ceiling of stone that is four layers thick and your support columns are no more than five spaces apart you'll never have a collapse.

You don't need 4 layers of rock, three will do actually, but sometimes you find Iron overhead and having an extra layer lets you poke holes here and there without any problems.

I also like to make my columns 2x2.

I know it wastes a bit of rock but I can mine a column if it's got iron in it without losing support.

I pick at it, take the iron, replace the hole.

Same SI in A17 with regards to stone so it should work.

So far... at least for me, it has.

What I'm surprised to hear is that people are getting collapses who've been mining for hundreds of hours in A16.

Clearly then know what they're doing so....

... I'm a little confused.

Ok so we finally found something, but cant really correlate the find to boulders of any type. Still not sure if it is the big or small ones or what. Anyways, we dug in a few different biomes and so far only found iron veins.

In desperate need of ore and nitrate, but since finding the iron at least there is hope! Yes mining is a huge pain now, but you still can do it with a lot of patience. A lot.

We haven't had much for cave ins aside from digging stupidly under sand, knowing exactly what would happen lol.

Have not had much for zombies either. One wandering horde came by and we continued making a ruckus so they would dig. Had yet to see a digging zombie, and I wanted to know what they could do.

I don't feel they dig so fast that you couldn't escape, and you definitely know they are coming so its a pretty cool feature. Also awesome and terrifying when they break through. I think this feature is pretty neat and nothing you can't handle if you pay attention.

Yes, this the bit that surprised me - there is an almost nearly infinite supply of Iron in POI's - so while I definitely understand the need to mine other ores, mining for Iron seems pretty redundant.

Iron from mining gives more bang for the buck. The iron ore gives like more than 1 scrap iron in the forge so it's really nice when you find a big vein.

You could use zombies to make the pictured base here come crashing down, and the result is a bunch of scrap. Just don't make the same mistake i did, and accidentally get caught in the middle of the collapse. ;)

I was attacked underground during the day by a wandering horde. Decided to make my first cave last night in the desert. Dug 1 block wide and crawled my way down, intended to stop at bedrock but being cut-off by a scrap vein. While salvaging it, I heard the horde above. Ignored it until it sounded close, and went back to my tunnel to see them digging down-- and fast. I killed them easily enough. The Steel Fireaxe is a great melee weapon, but they got all the way to the bottom so an Ak took care of the rest.

After that, I established a policy to always have two extrances to any caves I make.

Idk if I'm lucky with the veins, judging by this thread I am, but I got it on the first try. The scrap looks dark and black, like shale, which is what I was really searching for.
