PC A solution to the "Run away from hordes" problem.

Remind me again why "players avoiding hordes" is anyone else's problem? Who cares?
It really isn’t. This has been more about, if you have easier settings, it should be possible with easy means (running, vehicles). If you have harder settings, then it shouldn’t be possible with the same means... because that is what is desired by that player.

Because the problem is not "players avoiding hordes". If that was the problem, people would ask TFP to remove the option to disable the hordes in the first place. Do you see anyone asking for that? No. The problem is "give us a practical/actual reason to defend/use the game's TD elements", which is a problem that is irrelevant to what other people are doing.

Even if you get the horde night you're imagining right now, I doubt you'll be satisfied for long.
Ok.

Is it too late for me to randomly state that anyone who thinks there are too many weapons in the early game lacks self control by taking them? Just pretend they aren’t there for crying out loud. It’s just will power....

If there was a way to build a non-cheesy horde-proof base, running away would be more balanced because you could more easily skip the horde by staying in your base than driving around. Of course, then you get the issue that it becomes easy late-game. This could be mitigated by measures such as needing to travel far away from your strongest main base for resources, or a rare extra-nasty horde night.

I suggest pretending that you are playing a completely different game that requires you to have too many weapons in early game. It's more immersive that way.

Welcome to a survival game. You are leaving the safe zone. Please be aware of danger ahead. Leave your teddy bear behind and bring weapons.

It's not like other survival games don't have safe houses to temporarily shelter in. Part of survival is knowing when to fight and when to gtfo of dodge, that's realism. What's not realistic is a bunch of braindead rotten meatbags digging down to your deep underground concrete bunker within minutes. It's my game and I should be able to do as I please as do you.

That's reasonable. I'm all for a setting to stop zombie digging. I'm all for being able to run away on lower settings. I'm not against these things just because I feel that they are "non-existent problems". Sound familiar? I know it is a problem for others, so I respect that opinion. I can only hope to get the same respect for what I feel is a problem in the way I want to play.

It'll come to everyone gets teleported in the wasteland nekkid with a sprained ankle on horde night.... might as well go all the way and force a specific game play. <not sarcasm>

It'll come to everyone gets teleported in the trader fully clothed with a full stommach on horde night.... might as well go all the way and eliminate all game play. <not sarcasm, just funnier>

a bunch of braindead rotten meatbags can exist = realism

they can dig = not realism

/just checking

Or do like I do and scrap them because I won't need them yet and materials are more useful than a bunch of weapons sitting around in a chest unused.

I'm with you on that one. They aren't worth much and I don't need dozens of weapons. I prefer the mechanical parts and the ammunition.

Yeah, that's a good thing to do. As a plus, it's a faster way to pull the ammo out. I'm guessing with the new system to come, doing this will be a no-brainer.

@Roland I do not use or loot them the first few days. Same with the forge.

Point is, people here are asking for a problem to be solved that is only a mindset. And that solution takes away freedom for others. Now you can deceide what you wanna do without switching things in the menu. Like it would be in a RL situation.

It´s not a very good in game experience if i have to switch to the menu to keep the freedom of choice during a game.

You ask for solutions for a hypothetical problem, wich causes extra work for TFP and cuts the freedom for players. Just because you, a minority, could avoid them. Look at this thread, if this was highly wanted it wouldn´t be just us few here.

People who want to be forced to fight everything should play linear FPS/Tower Defense games. There is tons of them out there. The beauty of this game is freedom in the world and in your choices.

So on one hand we're being level-gated to prevent us from advancing from the stone age too quickly and at the same time weapon loot has been made so good I've got a box of composite bows, an AK47 and 300 rounds of rifle ammo by day 5.

I've currently got better equipment from looting in the first week than I ever had from crafting in A15.

And that quote is amongst the dumbest things I've ever read.

Everything is a mindset - we don't need hunger, diseases, debuffs, health, stamina blah blah blah... anything. Why "force" the player to, like, you know, engage in game mechanics? They will engage in them, if they have the willpower to do so! Oh and also your problem belongs to the minority and is hypothetical and will cause the game to become linear, dumb it down and other random negative things I have heard people say about games!

#nohope :/

And that quote is amongst the dumbest things I've ever read.
Mate, with willpower you could play the game with your own rules and play the game as a completely different game or even play it without playing it at all! Anything is possible. Don't understand why you would find that totally not sarcastic quote dumb.

I'm not that bothered by the digging, but zombies have a sort-of established mythos that does not include being able to detect you under 50 meters of dirt and dig down to you in no time at all.

There's plenty of variation in how zombies are used/"explained" in other universes, sure, but I can understand folks being disappointed by zombies that dig that readily and effectively.

Agreed. It was meant to be so for irony. Sometimes writing something dumb makes a point for the opposite of how it reads.

I don't disagree that there are too many guns available early game and I don't think we should just pretend they don't exist. The game should be designed with the correct balance.

Similarly, the game should be balanced so that we don't have to pretend that an easy button like running away and getting 100% guaranteed safety with zero risk doesn't exist and just not do it. Every reward should have a risk associated.

They can't detect you under 50 meters of dirt except on bloodmoon night and the lore for that has been established for quite some time now in the game: They can detect your position anywhere on bloodmoon night.

The idea: During the blood moon, zombies that are in total darkness move MUCH faster. Like 10x faster.
What this does:

Running away from the horde is a lot harder. If you carry a light source, the zombies won't instantly catch up to you, but they will always be on your heels.

Players are encouraged to stay at their base because it's a lot safer.

Lighting up your base actually has positive gameplay benefits, so there's less temptation to forgo light sources and turn up the gamma.

What are the downsides?
I would like to see "running away" become its own kind of minigame with chance of failure and of course the reward of survival if successful. Some sort of use of torch light could be fun, some sort of driving challenge added if taking a vehicle-- basically anything to make it so the choice to run away leads to interesting game play and risk instead of just hold down a button and get guaranteed safety.
