Hi all,

So.... I have dug a hole, a deep hole, all the way down to the bedrock, my intention is the hollow out a cavern and build an underground retreat.

My question then is how often to I have to put supports in to stop the whole world (and police station) falling in on top of me?

I was also thinking about building a tower around the entrance to allow me to shoot down at the zombies.

Any thoughts, hints or tips would be appreciated, thanks

I have hollowed out a pretty big ass cavern in Rock. Without feet of cave in. I can't even imagine how big before there was an issue. I have gone for sure 12 wide and long as hell without issue.

I've had underground rooms roughly 30 blocks by 60 and 10 tall. There's no worry of cave ins that far underground

What these guys said. I know the rule above ground is something like 7 blocks across before structural failure:

Underground may be different, from what these guys are saying..

Thanks, I have watched some of the building vids out there and am learning about the "max build per block" idea, just cant seem to find out difinitive answers for underground. think i will just go for it and occasionally prop the roof, hope for the best lol

I always made a post style system with the posts and rails made out of cobblestone and the filler to walk on out of cobblestone frames.... They are 7 block squares, 5 blocks high... The only time I didn't do a support system was in the desert, digging for iron and shale and I had my first collapse ever... It was cool to see but it left a gigantic gaping hole in my underground system... So I know it seems like a lot of work and a lot of wasted time but it's better than a cave in... And I use the wooden 45 degree stairs with railings to get up and down... I'll post a picture later...

You can make rock in the cementmixer (cement/stone/sand). Then you can see its stats. I think it holds 120 and weights 10. The other way for the stats is an creative game. There you can choose every block in the game. I find that caverns are pretty solid.

I can cram in work bench, chemistry station, campfire, forge, cement mixer, and the 6 labeled boxes all in a tight space.

Careful how you place torches down. This one broke. But in this video you get a quick glimpse of a tiny outpost in this tunnel. That tiny cut next to the two boxes near wall I dug another tunnel to that mountain peak north. Waiting for my leg to heal first. Also got a special mission to recover a old minibike near the radiation border.

Gonna have to back track to a old outpost and grab maybe two first aid kits. Debating to recover the bike first or the backpack. Its been over a couple months since that happened. I recovered my buddies bike in the other radiation zone. But never got back to this area. Northeast corner of naveszgane map. I know there's a sniper rifle and over 500 rounds and ton of duke coins. Maybe 50 meat. Debating to build a box at the border and empty myself then try and pick up the backpack while a first aid kit in hand? Unless the hide clothing keeps out some of the radiation? Or recover the bike first.

Then see if the basket is empty. Then empty in that. Debating to go on foot walking there from mountain peak. Or take a bike and take apart the recovered bike. I hope I don't get hypothermia with hide clothes on. Worried I wont be able to grab all the stuff in the backpack. Shame there wasn't a option to skip clothes from dead body. I suppose with two first aid kits I could go in twice to recover all the contents of the backpack and bike hopefully. Sorry I kinda swayed off topic a bit. I guess I could drop a bed near radiation border? If I die I can respawn there.

That's what I did when I drove into a rad zone like a dumbass... I put a bedroll and storage box and just kept running in, jumping on the bike and backing it up till I was out of the rad zone... Died a bunch of times but it was worth it to get the stuff in my basket... Idk why air drops fall in the rad zone... Does the hazmat clothing help at all?

I have lost a few backpacks and a minibike once.. and radiation gear did Jack to help. Could have changed by now, but I learned my lesson.

I have been told that as long as you have stone around you at bedrock there was no limit on room size. It is when you hit gravel deposits it gets tricky. Even then it was only the gravel area that was suppose to collapse.

That being said it is not so good for buildings above your room at bedrock. I still don't know how all the SI works but building a large open area under the station might not be a good idea...maybe dig small shaft down to bedrock and then narrow tunnel away from station and then open up your room.

For me I just dig out a room about 13 x 13 or close to it and live with that. I can then make some smaller tunnels off of this area and make more rooms. Usually the size goes by my gut saying I better stop here because I am pushing it.

Crappity crap crap....answered in another console post.....anyway the info may still be good. Someone who has more experience may be able to confirm or deny my answer...

my experience has taught me that a cave chipped out of stone at the bedrock level can be quite large. but beware, any kind of soil, sand, or clay can cause a weaknessif not shored up. and digging a cave in the desert can be very dangerous. don't go more than a dozen meters without supports.

Nope. As of now, hazmat gear really has no purpose except it fetches a good amount at traders or to scrap it for the military fiber.

Hopefully they eventually implement it to where it does some protection in rad zones. The hazmat mask actually looks kinda cool.
