PC A case for 4K maps.

I just started trying out 4K maps.

Why wasn't I doing this before? It's great!.

Only have 8GB of RAM and a slow computer.

16K maps take 2 hours and 20 minutes to complete.

But I only play single player really.

On a 16K map I would never in a lifetime be able to loot all the POIs, even with the loot respawn turned off.

4K maps take me 3 minutes and 30 seconds. Still more POI's than I can loot in a lifetime. Looks like water spawns better on these little maps as well. Seeing a lot more wildlife. Setting cranked up and runs smooth.

Why was I beating my self up this whole time? Great map size for single player.

This Map Seed has A nice Town Set Up and a road system that nicely interconnects ( make a car , patrol for zombies ). Decent biome setup... This map has something for everyone.

I'm of a very similar opinion Wigbert. Once my base is complete and essentially invulnerable, and my character is more or less maxed out and with all gear options open to me, I figure I've pretty much "beaten the game" and my motivation to continue in that game starts to wane.

So, I tend to restart a lot (and it's the earlier game stages I enjoy the most anyway). So 4K maps are the same for me as you, as a single player, I'm never going to fully clear a 4k map before moving on to the next game, so they're a real option for me as well.

I always tried to explore every part of the map, so a bigger map gives me more to do in that regard. But a 4K map is still totally viable. I'm not that picky.

I also tend to do long term play throughs on these types of games. Did the same with ARK. I do like the early game grind, but I don't wanna do it very often. There's always something else I can do to keep chugging along. I'm trying to wait till A18 to drop to start a new game, so hopefully it isn't too much farther out.

Also, nice seed name. Lol.

We won't see A18 until next year....look how long it took to churn out A17?

They already seem to be testing it, so I'm hoping by the end of August at the latest.

A17 was a much bigger change than A18 will be. At least from a dev perspective. I think they learned their lesson from it as well.

I personally prefer 16k. I just like huge world, where you can travel for so long. Discovering new things. Also, feels unnatural to me when things are too close to each other.

About A18, it will be most likely in second half of current year.

I like to get on my minibike and just go. But in A17, minibikes are nerfed and I can run as fast as a minibike goes. So I build a motor bike instead. And just go. See what is out there. See what is waaayyy out there. Travel 10K and set up another base.

Noooo, we won't see A18 until next year...one thing TFP is good at is taking their sweet time on releases...

Do we need a case for 4k maps? Its not like TFP are planning on taking them away. What we need a case for is 16k (or larger), to make sure its supported going forward.

I've tried to generate 20K maps, cause that is how big RWG used to be, but the client won't generate it. If you generate the template, the server won't load it and create the world. 16K seems to be the hard limit at this time.

I'd make a case for 20K maps, if for no other reason than 1) that is what we had prior to A17 and 2) We want it. I want it. The players want it.

I play solo and don’t know why, but used to play 8k maps only. When read this au decided to try 4K. I Mt takes so much less time to generate and I seem to be close to cities every time I start. Thanks for recommending it....

The only Drawback

The biggest drawback to 4K maps are if they weren't small enough.. the Radiation zone around the edge is huge.

Takes up half a screen of map space from edge of map to the event horizon. Looks like the radiation zone does not scale down with the rest of the map. I had Pop-n-Pills and Shotgun M standing smack dab in the middle of the radioactive death.

Think if they can make the networking handle more people/server load, then we would definately want bigger maps.

I hope during the final stages the optimize everything and make a bigger server not a big deal. I like big maps because I will randomly roam and build outposts when 1 base is done.

Bolded for emphasis. I totally agree. I think the game would be much more interesting if the map were larger, the amount of cities smaller and the cities themselves made MUCH larger, with everything in between open country and the odd POI. Cities should be huge enough that 3-4 players can live apart in one and almost never notice anyone else is there, because it's just so big. Clearing a city should take just ages.

To bad they can't do it minecraft-style, where new chunks are generated upon access and the world is virtually unlimited in size. They could have it generate chunks in proximity to players in the background so they are ready to go by the time the player gets there...

I now see what you mean, I found a great city and place to set up, but about 1/2 way through the city I hit radiation. I was staring at all these great locations and POIs to loot, with no way to get there. However, I am still enjoying the 4k map - Quick and easy to create with plenty of space still. I will see how it goes.

A lot of us have really old hardware (myself included) and cannot generate good maps with the vanilla 7 Days random world generator. When it does work the map is flat and boring or takes a lifetime to generate.

Well, Bore no more.

For those that haven't the time or patience to learn Photoshop... I did, have time that is...

For those that haven't a clue what a height-map or Perlin-based turbulence is... I kindda know whats going on.

For those that hate waiting for the vanilla Random World Generator to make you a map... it's done.

I've always liked learning new things, so height-map editing for my favorite game... I'm in.

I'm as new to all this height-map map-making as the next guy but I am pretty good with painter programs and have a knack for world creation in game editors. I've been making worlds since '99 or so, think... Unreal Tournament, UnrealEd2.0... plus it's fun as heck to get pulverized by Zeds in a world I helped create.

I've uploaded these four maps to my Google Drive for everyone to download and play around with.

Single downloads --> BallsOut(54MB), Bananaland(34MB), Bananaland2(35MB), Minimap4k(43MB)

All 4 at once -->bigtstep70_4KMaps(166 MB)

Prerequisites --> Compopack (the most recent one, that's all)

WARNING: I have not thoroughly tested any of these maps and can not guarantee that stability issues will not arise with prefab placement

(prefabs slicing/stacking atop each other... hey it happens).

Have fun Zombie Slayers
