A bear should not evaporate when I shoot it in the head with an exploding arrow.

It evaporated so I can only assume it is dead. They should die when I shoot them in the head with an exploding arrow. I used to hunt dire wolves and zombie bears for the leather. Then they started dropping red bags so people began to hunt them for the red bags. I think this is why they evaporate now.
Animal corpses disappear if you damage them. Did your last explosive arrow fly into a bear corpse? The bear has a fairly long death animation.

If you do X amount of damage to a corpse is disappears. I accidentally vaporize bears if I open up on them with a machine gun + recog while they are charging at me. They die and the next bullets in flight immediately destroy the corpse and I don't get to harvest it. So basically, if you do enough damage they not only die but go poof.

Tiniest of nitpicks, but bullets have no flight time here; the ones that destroy the corpse are still in your magazine when the target dies. Including shotguns, even the "extra" pellets hitting the target won't damage the carcass; only the next shot will.

Consider the death animation time and the player's reaction time. The bear's animation is quite long and if you don't release the button during it while shooting from a machine gun, you'll lose the corpse quite often.

Recognize the death sound, and stop shooting. If you want the corpse, it's not a "fire until movement stops" situation, merely a "fire until dead".

Use a shotgun if you're too terrified to control your fire, it'll slow the furball down.

Hah yeah I worded that poorly, I didn't mean literal flight time, more like that I'm just "spray and pray" that I kill the bear before he gets to me :)
