You should reserve judgement until you play with all these new features combined. There is much more thought and emergent gameplay in this build than in years. The community asked for most all of these features too so blame your fellow players if you don't care.
Honestly it's a ton of fun. I highly recommend a new start but we're supporting old saves. It's not apparent on the surface reading the release notes the impact these features have. For example on day one I had set up a small camp near some water 1/8th mile away or so. I made it home just after dark and realized I needed water badly and had found 2-3 jars that day. So I went out to fill the jars at night and zombies had spawned near the water. I snuck over and filled my jars but the zombies sensed me and I ran back to my base and barely defended my weak fort from them.
So you need to think about where you are building your base, how far a water supply is, and remember to fill them during daylight hours or risk a night time feral taking you out.
That's not even getting into smells which are a total game changer. Even late game if you just slam some food in the wasteland, it can attract a LOT of attention. I had just cleared a T6 poi and was beat up and wounded and infected, so I ate some honey brisket, a very powerful late game food that uses a lot of meat and honey to craft (I was tired of having 5 stacks of raw meat late game so this new recipe helps clear out your meat reserves!) and it started to cure my infection but the smell attracted a lot of zeds so it was a scary situation with the crits I had and lower health with zombie bears, wights and dire wolves, etc it was like a mini horde almost.
So eat indoors or wait until you are on the road to eat unless you're looking for some action.
Storms are no longer time out simulator. The better your clothing the longer leash you have to run around in a storm and not take damage. So it's risk assessment instead of a guaranteed time out for most players.
With biome hazards being airborne, storms, weather, and food creating smells the new meta is always being aware of your surroundings so you can take some cover from all the dangers out there, but beware of what's inside when you duck into a building. It's quite a different beast we have cooked up, so I wouldn't judge it too harshly until you get into it. Best build I've played in ages.
