PC 16K Maps

And because I have no life.

Memory size is just me eyeballing Task Manager and the commit for 7 Days To Die.

Actual Seed input for all was 'RWG Size Tests' without quotes.

Save Game name used on New Game menu when selecting these generated worlds was '7 DAYS TO DIE'.

16k. Seed: SaturnTime: 38m 17s.

Generating Country Roads took 17 min of that. Data export: 8 min.

This was in the previewer.
If only I had the money to build a new rig. More RAM, must have more. :)

BTW, after map is made. Took 10 minutes for initial download and connect on 16k.

Then afterwards took 1 minute 45 seconds to connect. But some players are getting disconnected after 2 minutes. They can usually connect after trying again once or twice.

Good info. Maybe I'll set up a server on the weekend and do some dedicated server time tests as well for connecting. The second connect attempt time sounds about the same as the local startup time for a map of that size. As such, likely just the download taking all that time on first connect. I may need to use some bandwidth filter to simulate a remote dedicated if I try those time tests. (Those are now on my maybe list {have lots of stuff I want to do and not infinite time}).

Once it's explored, they will likely take up more room. The map data exists, but the region files still aren't created until you visit them.
Hmmm, does this imply that as servers have players run around and explore more, subsequent connections and loading on that server will take longer and longer?

I would think no. It just means the server will end up storing and storing more region files. Just like Navezgane has the initial starting size of the world folder, plus the generated region files for each region a player actually explores. Once they have had that initial large download of the world, the rest would be the normal world load time.

i did it in one of the earlier experimentals - i think it was B208. It took 72 Minutes on my machine, Loading a game that was using the map took about 10 minutes....

My Spec:

32 GB Ram,

Ryzen 1700 (at that time not overclocked, so running at 3.3Ghz)

Zotac Geforce 1080 (non-ti, with nice factory oc, but not very much)

And it had problems with memory consumption.

Loading game, exiting to menu, loading game again, exiting to menu -> Memory consumption of 7d2d was about 29 GB.
See I don't mind the long generation time.

I can do that while doing laundry or cleaning or whatever...

It's the long loading times.

That's annoying.

My Comp is pretty good so it's not a problem for me but I can see others getting totally frustrated.

Ten minutes to load?

Some people only have an hour a day to play.

That's a lot to ask.

WorldGenerator:Generating county 'North Huxuxu Mountains' took 42 minutes, 21 seconds

26 of that was generating country roads

Ryzen 1700 @ 3000MHz (haven't bothered to over clock it)

32GB memory

Linux - Slackware 14.2 64 bit with 4.19.12 kernel

Running from SSD

The memory is the key - at the peak of processing I think it consumed almost 14GB ram, and those that don't have much memory, especially those running Windows, will probably experience poor performance and crashes. In my case, I run Linux and have 32GB ram, so it didn't even touch the swap file. Running from an SSD probably helps performance a bit, maybe, I forgot to watch drive access rates while it was processing.

The initial join from a client takes about ten minutes, as the world downloading process is very slow. Subsequent joins are much faster BUT, Now another problem has surfaced.

I watched one of my players join, and the client tried to allocate 17.7GB ram. So I ran it on my computer, and memory consumption peaked at 18.6GB, and after done loading dropped to 15.3GB. This means that those with only 16GB ram in the computers are not going to be able to play on this map.

Is there any way to reduce client memory consumption? This is kinda a deal killer for running 16K maps, if the client is going to need that much memory.

I'm sure TFP is aware of this, I'm wondering if it's worth filing a bug report?

They know the RWG needs work. A LOT of work. 7.2km from my start to the trader for the initial quest. um...

And I think I've got a winner for the wonky road. will post after work. (it goes UP a mountain, and down the other side) :)

Thank you Roland. I tried forever to figure this out. Some help and hints are great, but, some of us are not super computer literate;-) Not to forget old hehe.

I know the game is all about zombies, but let's avoid zombie threads.
