That's just the thing though. The issue isn't with how the client saves the data. The issue is with how Microsoft's custom OS on the XBox saves the data. Better optimization should bring an improvement/reduction in the amount of data that needs to be processed and saved, which will help to alleviate the issue. The core of the problem though lies in the OS, which is something the dev team will have a problem working around.
Keep in mind also that they aren't writing one client. They have to write two. One for Sony, and one for Microsoft. It's kinda like writing one for Windows ME, and one for Linux.
