    Now to safely unmount a drive in linux: sudo umount /mnt/sdb1 Just remove the usb device and you are good with your backup. Remember best practice is to have an onsite backup and an offsite backup a minimum of 50 miles away in case the worst happens. And if possible store them in a fireproof safe.
