I guess if your playing with some P3 type of player then I guess that could be a problem for your group.  So we're going to overly complicate a simple system because the people you play with are jerks.

Yes still they do drop.  You go into a working stiffs and you'll come  out with about load of tool magazines even if your not  specced in it

It's always been that way?   You could never just mine. You had to loot to get mats , water food ect. If you're playing as a group now and have a dedicated miner. The people looting can save the books they need to read to get better at mining.

Honestly for anyone playing on default setting nearly every melee choice is doable.   I'm doing a mining build with points in motherlode and  miner69er and the fire axe just annihilates everything. I've tried spears, club , baton and they all seem to work great

To repeat what Boban said., your best bet for food is to form the buried supplies quests from traders.   You will generally get a few food items , sometimes you'll be lucky and get a high tier food item. like hobo stew or yucca juice.

Not sure what happened but was level 12 on day 8 and after patching I'm back to level 1 on day 8?   I have all my equipment just all my unlocks are gone now for abilities and books.

On the first few nights where I have nothing to do I'll just exit to menu set the length of a full  day to 10 mins. Log in wait like 3 mins till morning. Log back out and reset the time.  Kind of cheap I know ,  but I've played over 3000 hours so I don't like sitting there all night doing...

Yep, I do that also, usually have 3 or 4 chest outside each trader for junk. Problem this time was that I had the perk for double rewards and got the next tier bonus also so I had 4 items to select and only had 3 spots.  

When stuff falls behind the traders desk when your inventory is full and you can't pick it up.  Just lost a T6 compound crossbow.  

Just bad luck.  1st workbench I found was working , or maybe i was just super lucky?
