QOTW: What's one of your fondest memories you remember when you first started playing 7 Days to Die?

My best memory is the very first time I played and I spent the night on the wall in the junkyard out in the desert. I'll never forget how relieved I felt when the sun came up and they weren't running anymore. The main room was full of zombies, I managed to kill them all anyway.

Yup, hanging out with a friend on voice .. the silliest highlight of that was when we were trying to find ore / tunneling out of our base. I was digging a minimal 1x2, we couldn't both fit at the end of it. He was trying to dig with me (I main miner :P), but ended up chipping me every now and then. I told him to stop / go do something else .. but he wanted to help, so, he kept trying. Admirable, but... After a couple more chips, I pulled out my bow, drew it fully, turned and put one right between his eyes.
Instakill. The dead silence that followed on voice just absolutely sent me.

I hadn't even considered it'd be a one shot. :)

The game where I didn't find the forge ahead book until like week 3 and had to figure out how to survive with scavenged gear since I couldn't craft iron tools or weapons. It was maddening at the time, but really fun.

A17. I can remember the night of day 7 descending upon us (group of 4). First horde night I love experienced and we all managed to survive, though the house we were using as a base was mostly turned to Swiss cheese by the end of the night and we were holed up in the last upstairs bedroom killing them as they came single file into the door.

Second playthrough ever. Friend and I spawn in the wasteland. I walk up to the top of a hill literally behind me and there's a zombie bear at the bottom of the other side. We end up meeting up and occupied a ranger tower that is now a T3 POI (idr it's name). We were bewildered by the amount of zombies always near our base. The real hilarity occurred when I chopped down a power pole for wood and 2 seconds later my friend is screaming "OH S*** RUN" as we both got run down by a wandering horde of zombie dogs that was led by a zombie bear. LMAO

We set up our first base in a POI I forget the name of, but my friend and I refer to it as "pit house" because the first floor dining room collapses when you step on it dropping you into an underground pool of water.

Anyhow, we patched the hole and set up storage and crafting on the first floor.

The first horde night rolled around and we ended up fighting them from the top of the stairs on the second floor. It worked pretty well and we had a lot of fun. As the second horde night drew closer we decided to double down on that strategy. We made a ton of wood spikes placed a couple by the doors. Plan was: hold them off at the doors, once they are about to break in run up the stairs, covering the stairs with wooden spikes as we retreat.

Second horde night comes around, much stronger this time. Almost immediately we fall back to the second floor and on the way I completely cover the stairs from bottom to top with wooden spikes... ...and the zombies decided that meant the stairs could not be traversed. They didn't even try. We could hear them downstairs howling and hitting things, but had no idea what was going on until suddenly ■■■■ started to collapse. We were unceremoniously dropped into the middle of the horde on the first floor.

As we were fighting and trying to survive, which we did, we spotted that not only had the zombies been hitting walls to bring down the house, they had destroyed almost ALL of our storage. Logged out completely ■■■■ed off, then after a few minutes of chatting our anger turned to laughter because honestly that was funny as hell.

Heh, saw that coming from the moment you mentioned the plan .. :P
Simple rule: stairs and spikes don't mix.

There's logic to it, but errors are unavoidable. Basically it seems the zeds consider the spikes as a solid block for path, they want to walk on top of it (but fail and fall through it). Stairs are diagonal; one block up is stairs, two blocks up is "a wall". If you cover an entire stairwell with spikes, it works until the lowest spike breaks - as long as zeds are trying to walk on the spikes as stairs. When the lowest spike breaks, the first stair block + the spike on top of it form a 2-high wall.

Similarly on top .. you can add spikes to "continue" the stair shape, but above the last step is a no-no; that's a wall again.

Heh, saw that coming from the moment you mentioned the plan .. :P

:) That was my intent in the way that I wrote it.

My friend and I made the deliberate decision to not look things up or otherwise arm ourselves with foreknowledge for our first playthrough. We learned some hard lessons, but that particular horde night stands out in my memory as both painful and as a fond memory.

My fondest memory...
when I first started playing 7 Days to Die, I joined a random server and was met by a pve guy who immediately started bragging about their community showing me around. The server was some kind of community base server — everyone lived and built at the same spot.
At the time I thought it was really odd this guy was so eager to show me these big, beautiful structures they'd built for their community. Back than most servers would go several thousand days and this one was on something like day 1000+, so they'd really spent time building stuff.
What made it one of my fondest memories is I waited that night for the clan to go offline, gathered every explosive I could find out of the warehouse he'd shown me, and blew the whole compound up, was one the biggest explosions in the game i have seen.

It wasn't an ingame event. It was the Night on GuppyCur's discord
that Guppy, Spherii, Dust2Death and others, finally convinced me it
was not only ok to mod, but actually expected and encouraged.

When we use to do it, It was called hacking.
That is actually how I got my career position. The head of the tech division
found out from the head of the Hi value security division, that I was a
greyhat "modder" that had caught people that were "modding" in the
company, at that time, for extreme personal gain.

He asked me what I had "modded" and had me "mod" for him impromptu,
as a test.

I was the only applicant that showed up, baseball cap turned backward,
driving gloves with cutout fingertips, calf high goth boots with taps, and
a pair of casual/dress black pants using blousing straps.

After the test I excused myself, and went to the elevator, My manager and
sup were waiting at the elevator door. They rushed me out of the building
like it was a mob hit. Took me to a restaraunt up the block, and asked,
what did you do. I went for the interview like you told me, why.

They said that the tech division wanted me to start, by the time I had
gotten to the elevator. So you see, finding a platform like this, meant it
was made to order for me. Been "modding" the "*" out of it it ever since.

I also like playing it too.

Back in Alpha 15, when I first started playing. My first or second night in my little 3x3 wooden shack I built boiling cans of water and hearing zombies moaning and running around extremely close to my shack and just sitting there not moving an inch lol. And if I remember correctly, back in those days night time was extremely dark too and you could barely see two blocks in front of you while holding a torch.

Alpha 15 or 16, there was this PvP server with a real ahole high level guy that stalked and camped me and killed me literally hundreds of times from the time I joined the server. I vowed that I would get revenge for him having no qualms about killing lowbies with nothing who were just trying to find food to not die of starvation. He built a huge steel tower, like 25x25 and 100m high. He played a LOT but I figured out his schedule and one Sunday at like 1am I finally had a few hours where he was offline and I could get my revenge.

That huge steel tower of his was built on dirt. So I spent a few hours using my stone shovel just mining all the dirt out from under his steel tower and it fell to the ground and I laughed like a madman so loudly that it probably woke up everyone in my neighborhood. And shortly after his tower collapsed, he logged on and asked me wtf happened and accused me of hacking because he couldn't imagine how I could have destroyed his amazing tower without hacks. He cussed me out and I'm pretty sure he was crying, then he ragequit and never came back. From that point on, I was able to actually level up without him camping me and killing me everywhere I went. Good times.

My earliest memory was in Alpha 7 or 8, when I crouched under a bridge all night in the water, hoping the zombies wouldn't sense me. It was so dark and creepy.

Some of the fondest memories are from Alpha 9 and 10, where we would gear up and run for hours to explore and see what was out there. There were always moments when someone would forget the raw meat in their pockets, and we would attract zombies while hiding on a roof in a makeshift shelter so the bees wouldn't get us. After listening to the zombies hissing all around, someone would eventually ask, "Who has meat in their pockets?" lol.

Sometimes we would run out of ammo, so we would stop and drop a forge while scavenging the nearby areas for resources to make bullets so we could continue on our way. More than once, we would end up running in terror on the way back to base, where night came just as we reached the outskirts of home.

You are a lovely human being.

You are a lovely human being.
At the time, I had just come from ten years of Guild Wars 1, i was a beta tester for that game up untill i left it, —Faction PvP, guild battles, coordinated teams, builds, counters, positioning, and actual competitive fighting.

Compared with that, 7 Days to Die PvP felt extremely basic. There was much less structure, balance, or tactical depth. What it did have was freedom. You could infiltrate communities, study players, find weaknesses, raid bases, destroy months of work, and create your own conflict.

So blowing up that compound was not really about winning a balanced fight. It was me testing what this new sandbox allowed—and discovering that the strongest part of 7D2D PvP was never the combat system. It was what real players could do to each other.
