Wandering Hordes Sandbox Option

I love everything that 3.0 brought in terms of the sandbox options and ways to share them. I've played the game for over 3,200 hours, both vanilla and modded. The options actually eliminated the need for a few QoL mods I usually download. I've always supported every vanilla update since I started playing back in A18.

My only gripe: I wish we had an option for wandering hordes in terms of frequency and how many zombies per horde. Darkness Falls covered it pretty well as well as the Improved Hordes mod. Improved hordes actually makes animal hordes too. Originally the Improved Hordes mod made it so a wandering horde would spawn daily and then they changed the system with 1.0 so hordes would 'wander' the map and could split and merge but they'd only actually spawn in when a player was in the vicinity.

Wandering Horde frequency and Wandering horde amounts would be amazing sandbox options to add in my opinion... I miss when wandering hordes were actually something to fear instead of a rare occurrence or only having maybe 7-10 zombies. I want them to be a threat without having to resort to a mod or waiting for a blood moon for a horde challenge or even the option to crank up wandering hordes and turn off blood moons. That is a fun way to play too, like JaWoodle's "Anytime Anywhere" playthrough. I had a server like that once.

This is my most desired feature, even more so than craft from containers. I like the new universally increased zombie spawn option we now have but wandering horde controls would really be the cherry on top. Using mods for it is ok but they don't always support the latest updates quickly (or at all) and honestly it just feels like a perfect fit with the focus on giving us more sandbox options.
I usually play with blood moon turned off these days and IMO sizeable wandering hordes are a perfect replacement.

I always seperate my home and horde base when I have blood moons on. When I ran a server with the Improved Hordes mod and turned off the Blood moons, I used my base landclaim to super expand my home and just made 1 massive base. It was awesome. If improved hordes gets updated before a sandbox option becomes available, I'll have to do it again.

The infinite mystery of when a epic random battle may take place is so thrilling. Halfway through a job? Here's a horde. Traveling somewhere? Here's a horde. Trying to sort your stuff at home? Here's a horde. Nowhere truly felt safe and it's exciting.

Sounds like you want a wandering hoard of 60-70 zombies, exactly like on Days Gone, but the problem with that is it wouldn't work on console (but maybe on next gen consoles), since it starts lagging like crazy when 25 zombies get close to your character.

I play on PC. I get that for consoles, cant you dial down settings though to help with the lag?

Anyways, it doesn't have to be that crazy. Im not saying 60-70 zombies. Most servers have it set so only 64 zombies can be alive at once at any given time on a map and mods have to obey the map setting and such. I just want them more frequently and 15-25 zombies at once would be cool. Not 7-10. Options to set it lower wouldn't be bad for those with lower end PCs or consoles to, it doesn't have to be just for larger hordes.

Really good idea. My favorite sandbox options would be to set zombie density depending city, town, wilderness and biome but this is now my second favorite one. Sounds easy to implement with a potentially big impact on the game.

100% agree. I played with very large wandering hordes spawning at a high frequency, and it was a breath of fresh air. It led to plenty of dangerous and memorable encounters. The only thing I'd also add is an option to adjust the chance of horde zombies dropping loot bags, it will go very well with these settings. Otherwise, you'll end up flooded with lootbags almost as quickly as after a Blood Moon.

It would also be interesting to see a mechanic around sound so that if you shoot weapons without silencers it will cause more wandering hordes to spawn. You could even have it get progressively harder by spawning rads or harder zombies if you don't stop.
The only difficulty with that is that they would have to implement it in a way where it cant be farmed and find a way to cap it to only so many wandering hordes.

So...screamers?
