I am so heartbroken there is no split screen anymore! This is my husband and I's go to game to play together. We finally bought the newest version not knowing you had done away with split screen. We were so excited to play the updated version together and now we are absolutely crushed! Please please please bring it back!

Unfortunately, it isn't possible. Console already struggles with the game and trying to duplicate everything to make it split screen would bring consoles to a crawl. It isn't even really a good idea for PC as you'd need a really powerful PC to handle it and most players don't have that. And PC can be much more powerful than any console. The old version had significantly less to it than what the game has now. The game is just so much more than back then that it needs more resources to run and split screen just isn't an option anymore.

Here is the official statement from The Fun Pimps:
Q: Will the Console Edition support local splitscreen?
A: No. Due to technical limitations and memory restrictions, this feature is not currently possible on the Console Edition.

Yeah Space and Riamus spoke best about it; it was not an easy decision and there was a lot of number crunching and theorycrafting going on. But, it was deemed impossible. In fact, the old console version was running at near max memory, hence the lack of stability while playing split screen (been there with a friend). Sorry to say, it broke our hearts also.
