V2.5+ Survival Revival Dev Diary

About that Faatal-quote: I would assume it means there will be less minor versions. So for example there would be only 3.0, 3.1 and 3.2, not up to 3.6 like currently

The only consequence I can see would be that console players would be less often out of sync with PC servers.
Basically there will still be small and big releases, but anything that is a feature release would be a major number change. If we applied that to previous releases, 2.5 would be called 3.0 and 2.6 would then be 3.1.

With the help of an apiary, you can kill bees, as well as greatly lower the FPS of the server - I recommend fixing this so that bees do not fly out from each opening.

It's 40%, not every time. The smoker mod also makes it so they stop spawning.

If you are in at least 2.5 b27, the bees spawn on closing, not opening.

So 4.0 will not be the story and stuff? You'll obviously have bigger releases between now and then, besides just bandits. Are we looking at 10.0 for gold version now? Not sure what the point is. Version numbers are already a mess and confuse people, so I suppose you can mess them up even more and it won't matter.

Imagine if they had just decided to call 2.5 3.0 purely to show that it was a major update (which it was). The uproar we would have heard and the accusation of lying we would have read because 3.0 would have released without bandits.

Whatever they do with the numbering-- one thing is clear. Whichever future update includes bandits better be the one called 3.0 lol

As I said maybe a month ago, we are changing how we divide up features into releases and what those version numbers will be. Expect it to not be what you are used to.

Version numbering is a whole philosophical topic. I remember really laughing out loud at the moment in the book "Just for Fun: The Story of an Accidental Revolutionary" where Torvalds explained why the kernel is numbered the way it is. Especially his line: "I was too optimistic."

@rateds2k what do you not "get"?

He's saying:

take that with:

and
Fewer minor versions means longer times between updates (that's both good and bad) so that you can get more into those fewer minor updates instead of having a larger number of more quickly released minor updates. It also means that there are fewer times when mods need to be updated and fewer times when players may want to start a new game for the new update (even if it isn't required) so that they can see all of the new things.
both of them assumed it meant that TFP would group more of the changes into less updates.
but that does not comport with what Faatal is saying:
Basically there will still be small and big releases, but anything that is a feature release would be a major number change. If we applied that to previous releases, 2.5 would be called 3.0 and 2.6 would then be 3.1.
So I am just asking THEM to clarify what they are talking about...maybe even a why they are changing the update numbering system. Is it going to be explained in the updated road map MADMOLE said (on Dec 30th) they would announce soon? these seem like reasonable questions.

these seem like reasonable questions
I mean, they are I guess. Just coming from you it gets tiring. Also, Joel said there would be an updated roadmap, so I'd imagine there will be. Why hasn't there been one yet? Logical, rational brains would assume simply because it isn't ready yet. But keep asking, I'm sure they'll speed it up just for you. Honestly wish they would just to shut you up, but you've already proven you'll just move onto something else and keep whining.

We always get the next update "when it's done" so update numbers are meaningless. 2.6 could be called 365_035A and it wouldn't change anything; It's just a number. For TFP internally, it's easier for them to keep track of things being worked on, but for us... Who cares!
Hey! We got a new update, great!

appreciate the honesty...it is sad and petty (imo), but, at least it was honest. maybe if more of you asked critical questions it would not just fall to the few.
This logical and rational brain thinks that he said it 2 months ago, IN PUBLIC, so maybe they should move a little faster than slow on following up on it...but, that's just my opinion.
