Campfires have no smell?

When we eat, they can smell us from a small distance. But a canpfire should be smelled miles away (even if I don't like it, that's realistic).

We should have to make a safe place for a campfire before we start cooking and all, even in the start. It should attrack zombies. Wandering zombies.
Pleace do this discretely. If your high up, they shouldn't be able to find it. Or underground. You should be save in a home, ish. Or just make it a mayhem event.

To make sure the start of the game is actually doable, make sure traders have food you can buy.

Cheers

Camp fires should definitely cause smell when cooking. Use same smell distance values as each food item has. And same cumulative effect if multiple items are cooking.
This would also actually make cooking skill have secondary benefits able to cook faster and less time causing smell.

Campfires already generate heat that can lead to screamers. But if it generated smell as well, that would be okay. But in the end, it's such a minor thing. You can kill every zombie within 100m of your planned fire in a minute or two and you wouldn't have to hide it at all since there wouldn't be anything close enough to smell it. And that's if you even care about zombies visiting, which aren't really a challenge anyhow unless you're new to the game.

The smell system has promise but its another TFPs 60% prototype solution to prove it works. We hope it gets the appropriate breadth and depth but often these systems rarely or never get touched again.

The idea of the campfire being a source of "smell" is a good one. I am not convinced the stacking effect is correct but would think that foods having different smell radius's and the largest radius would apply. Secondary cooking benefits is a good addition as well. If zombies target dead animals then some player injuries should smell. Maybe a few more recipies with Sham/Rotton flesh could have reduced smell radiuses.

I have seen a few of your posts saying the zombies are not an issue. However this is a zombie game. More zombies coming at us I think is better. Campfire smell sounds like a great idea to me.

I don't know what settings that you play on but I play on warrior and sprint day and nightmare night and have been playing for years so am not new. They are an issue at least until day 10 at the base

If smell while cooking is implemented, could be a good use opportunity for the Stove + Range Top. The Range Top could eliminate or significantly reduce smell.

Like I said, it wouldn't be bad to add smell to the campfire. Maybe I'm just so used to dealing with them that they don't bother me. I also don't care about screamers or consider them to be more than a minor nuisance. But regardless of what anyone thinks about whether or not some zombies coming at you from multiple directions is difficult when they are generally spaced out since they come from wherever they happen to be and aren't just spawning in at equal distances, you can still just go kill everything nearby before starting a campfire. That takes very little time and then you don't have to deal with them. Or just do what I already do and start cooking before leaving so that it's finished when I return. By then, any smell would also be gone.

In the end, smell from a campfire might be a nice immersion element for those who want that and it could give you more things to kill, but it is extremely easy to make it not an issue. Start cooking and leave, kill everything nearby before starting, put up turrets so you can just drag in free XP without having to do anything.... It isn't a bad thing to add it, but I don't see it being all that significant. Just my opinion, of course. Everyone plays the game their own way and what may not impact me may still impact others.
