XBOX How does one go about getting their Xbox copy updated for free like PC players did?

Who do I see about getting my original copy on Xbox upgraded to the one actually getting updates?

Because I write software, namely IT tools for MSP engineers. If I were to just suddenly stop updates for the Mac and Linux editions but keep it going for PC and tell Mac/Linux users they need to pay full retail again to receive the same rights, I'd get my apps yanked from the App Store faster than I could say "TOS Violation". It'd be one thing if the PC version didn't get updates either and had to pay, but I hear there are new updates, zombie types, building pieces, UI upgrades, etc, and they're FREE, then I reinstall just to find out that no, because I made the mistake of growing up in the 80s and preferring a controller, I have to pay for the same thing... yeah, that is above and beyond the pale, and I'm just the right amount of petty to cause a scene with the wrong people over this. Tired of game devs trying to pull some greedy stuff that wouldn't fly in any other industry and just figuring it's a bunch of kids playing so who cares.

I care. This is like saying Netflix is gonna release a Netflix 2.0 that includes 3D and AR media, and that upgrade will be no cost, but only if you watch Netflix through Xfinity and anyone who watches through any other medium must pay a second add-on cost.

Are you at any point going to stop updates for PC players at like v31 and tell them Xbox players will continue to receive new stuff but Steam accounts are gonna have to buy again or be stuck without updates for 4 years, continually promised updates until you give up and uninstall, only to hear 4 years later that they have finally kept their promise... only not for you... others, yes, they kept their promise, but not to you, because you prefer a mouse.

Yeah, I'm well aware I missed the re-release here, it's not recent. But I'm willing to bet there are a lot of folks who don't know what y'all did, and I'd be more than happy to be the one to explain to the internet how TFP has decided it can treat 48% of the gamer population and try to be under the radar about it.

Let's hear it, one indie dev to another, how are you justifying this?

You can't update the original version. That was developed by a company that went bankrupt. You'll have to buy the current version again. TFP attempted to make it possible to update older versions but wasn't able to get that to be allowed by Sony/Microsoft. The best they were able to do was to get people a discount, but that was only for a short time when it was released to console. Your best option now is just to wait for a sale.

In the end, this isn't really any different from buying Madden 25 and then wanting to get Madden 26. It's a new game, even if it's technically just an updated version of an older game. And considering how much has changed in 7D2D since the old console release, it's practically a sequel at this point. It is unfortunate, but that's just how things turned out. No one expected that studio to go bankrupt.

Almost 2026 now and we still get threads like this? There was a limited time discount for owners of the original version but that ended last summer when the new version released on console like a year and a half ago now. Bit late to the party.

No, this is not a new edition, it's a collection of updates that another platform received for free. This is not like Madden 25 users not getting Madden 26, it's like all Dodge owners getting updates to their firmware, GPS, and remote start feature updates for free, but Dodge Ram owners specifically having to pay for that.

Sorry, but Microsoft and Sony are treating it as a new game. You have the choice to either buy the new one or keep using the old.
 
No, this is not a new edition, it's a collection of updates that another platform received for free. Probably the correct analogy would be: If Stellantis had licenced its Dodge design including names and all to Daimler exclusively for Europe and Asia, so that Daimler can produce its own adapted version for Europe+Asia while Stellantis kept out out of there and released its original Dodge only in the rest of the world. Daimler did the work of the adaption, but also got the revenue, while Stellantis got a licence fee.

Then the unthinkable happened and Daimler went bankrupt.

When Daimler went bankrupt, a very long process of selling the company assets started, but because they still had the exclusive licence for Europe and Asia, Stallantis could neither use their design of the european Dodge nor produce their own version for those continents.

After a few years Stellantis bought back the licence rights from Daimler and, according to Stellantis, was bought with the money they got from the licence fee, it seems it had been very expensive. But in the mean time the Daimler design was a relict which didn't work with newer highway congestion avoidance techniques in Europe. And the old design was so different from the current Stellantis Dodge design that it was impossible to simply update, especially with the new congestion avoidance techniques being mandatory now. The only sensible solution for Stellantis was to design the Dodge for Europe and Asia starting from their current Dodge, and do it in-house this time.

If Stellantis wanted to give some sugar to previous owners of the Daimler Dodge it would have to be a very limited, not only did they not have any or much money left from the licence deal, they now had to shoulder all the design work and production costs.
Furthermore they had 3 partners in Europe and Asia now who took over the sales efforts in those regions for part of the profits. But those partners surely didn't agree to give up part of their profits because there was some previous deal between Stellantis and Daimler they had nothing to do with. Also their market for Dodge in Europe was assumed to be largely dominated by previous Daimler Dodge owners, so if Stellantis wanted revenue at all in this market it would have to keep an eye on expenses, giving away its own Dodge for free (except for production costs) to current Dodge owners was a recipe for losing money in that market.

The Daimler Dodge sure had their name on it, but it was a car from Daimler, sold by Daimler, with only marketing links binding them and lots of design similarities

If you disagree, I can give you details to the real story about anything I have written here as analogy. Some is only hearsay from TFP, some of it are hard facts substantiated from sources outside of TFP.
