V2.4 Stable Biome Progression

Have to admit, was not a fan of the new system to "earn" your right to get into a biome. But yesterday I found myself feeling pleasantly gratified after fighting my way into the Snow Biome with a Bone Knife and Primitive Bow.

I think the Pimps may have found a decent balance to Biome progression. It was initially frustrating but gratifying in the end.

I found myself saying, "What's the rush? Slow down and enjoy the game!" Once I did that I actually began to enjoy the progression more instead of hurrying up to get past it. Not sure exactly where this "rush" mentality is coming from.

What made it much more relaxed for me is that the timer is reset when you seek shelter, and you also have a lot of time before you have to seek shelter again. In 2.0, you had to drink one smoothie after another just to have enough time to complete the challenges.

This is the key to enjoying the game. When you aren’t in a rush it doesn’t matter how many quests per day you do or how quickly you progress.

I had the same experience. First I got nervous when the heat icon turned on and my character groaned all the time, but then I noticed that I had a few minutes outside before any detrimental effects occured. I just made sure I always had something to do inside POIs and it was fun working on the task getting the badge.

For the badge itself I even made a sub-base in the desert first and collected all the materials for the workstations and the badge in the biome instead of going back to the previous biomes where I already had all materials together. I actually was short on leather for some time until an unlucky animal crossing my way reminded me of the easiest source for leather

The culture of MMORPGs that was already established before this game added XP and player leveling. It was pretty night and day the vibe that this game had before player stat progression through leveling up was added and after it was added. The fact that most of the progression mechanics were LBD oriented exacerbated it. People approached this game largely like they did Minecraft when there were no player levels-- chill exploration and world interaction and survival. As soon as RPG elements were added people started approaching it like WOW and other such games where grinding up your character stats was almost the entire point of playing and particularly in PvP settings-- necessary to keep the advantage. Most flex posts before the change were about massive builds and using the structural integrity in mind boggling ways. Most of the flex posts after the change were "It's day 6 and I'm max level, now what?" posts.

The good news is that player choice pretty much allows for both playstyles. You can play it slow and not focused on leveling up ASAP or you can play it as a challenge to level up as quickly and as efficiently as you can. Just don't believe anyone who says they are forced to play one way or the other.

Or you combine the two... level up as fast as you can so that leveling no longer matters and you'll have the experience of not having levels and just relaxing as you do whatever you want - building, for example. That's kind of how I play. I don't really try to level quickly, though I'll rush for the bike since I hate walking in games. But I also don't take my time. Once I'm at a higher level and have a lot of resources, I slow down a lot and spend the time building large or interesting bases, building ramps to jump rivers using Vehicle Madness vehicles and the dev supercharger, etc.

The current biome progression in 2.3 / 2.4 is better than the previous iteration. Now you have 3 minutes or so to be able to explore any biome of your choosing before having to seek shelter to recover (versus having to leave the biome). I did this with the wasteland for some high risk / high reward pay off which was extremely fun to do if you haven't tried it yet.

Here was one fun encounter I had trying to hunt dire wolves in the wasteland early game....

I think it's part of the fact that you are on a limited time frame with the horde nights to prepare so people instinctively feel pressured to play efficiently. Turning off the hordes removes some of the gameplay and tower defense elements so many don't want that either.

The game is much more fun when played casually for sure though.

I just wish there was more biomes and every biome had more hazards then just something a mask can solve. Im interested to see how the new temperature system is going to work. Tho

Need more diversity within the Biomes. Sub-Biomes would be amazing. Also just touching up the sparse land in some of the Biomes would be nice.
