Why Is This Ground Uneven?

The place where I built my horde base has some weird ground. Right where my base is the height of the ground drops down, (see screenshot). Can anyone tell me why this is and any possible ways to make it all on the same level around base?
Edit: Forgot say I raised the ground where the spikes are to try to keep them all on the same level.

The in-game best option is Topsoil, craft a plenty, place it around. Makes for a smooth surface.

There are some dev tools in cm, like some sort of a hoe to manipulate terrain levels. I've never learned to use them properly; last I tried, felt really clunky.

But you could also start putting down a floor in that area, you'll get demo holes eventually anyway; might as well start on the path to resistant flooring ... :)

In life, it is generally difficult to find level ground. Previously, more level areas were generated, but now it is more often necessary to level the landscape.

Yeah, I was thinking I would probably have to even out the ground manually with dirt blocks. I almost always end up putting cement flooring around the base to prevent holes.

The other weird thing is when I place a block on some of the ground in this area it sinks about a quarter of the way in. I can fix it by doing the three blocks or more to smooth the ground.

I have a feeling there was construction blocks that were placed in an area where the ground was sloping from 1 elevation to the next. When that happens(blocks being placed) it will raise/lower the ground to the nearest point. It looks a bit ugly, but what other people suggested should help smooth things out if you start placing topsoil on the lower sections.

oh its possible someone was digging around the base vs placing blocks down.

That's "terrain smoothing" in action. The ground consists of 1m cubes, just like your cobble blocks; just shaped a little more dynamically. For the map to look nice, and not minecrafty, the actual top surface is "artifically" smoothened in world generation. That causes the natural terrain to Not follow the actual block borders. Once you add something on such adjusted ground, the artificial smoothness is removed - otherwise your blocks would look sunk or worse, levitating.

There's no recovering the smoothness afterwards; sometimes replacing the dirt blocks may have them settle down to the original size, but that doesn't often look nice either.

If you place a block down, it will align with an integer elevation (31, 32, etc.). Terrain isn't limited by integers. Generally, if you place a block on terrain that is less than X.5, it will drop into the ground slightly. If place on terrain greater than X.5, it will raise the ground slightly (and sometimes be left floating).

The best option to get better terrain is to dig out a layer of terrain before building (i.e. build a foundation), though adding terrain is also an option.
