Influencers versus Content Creators

In some comments I have seen folks show disdain to 7d2d content creators and calling them influencers which they really are not.

Inlfuencers are the ones making videos trying to convince you to follow a lifestyle or by certain products. I have yet to see a 7d2d content creator do that.

7d2d Content Creators makes content for ENTERTAINMENT purposes. And that is mostly it. Some have spoken up recently (and in the past to a lesser degree) about problems they see with the game (others in order to protect their relationship with FP have kept a bit more quiet but I can understand that when your 7D2d content pays your bills. But they are NOT Influencers. They do well if the game does well. They do better when the game does better. So if anything they are stakeholders in seeing 7d2d do well. They don't try to tear the game down because they would be tearing down their livelihood.

P.S. Just because your livelihood depends on a game doesn't necessarily mean your suggestions for the game will work or be good BUT they are worth listening to because their own self interest is tied into 7d2D doing well.

It's a good distinction about the label. I would say that there can be some overlap. There is an element of "celebrity" (state of being well known) that comes with being a content creator with a large following and that can translate into having some influence over that following. If nothing else, he can raise the awareness of issues for those in his audience.

When JaWoodle's video came out I caught myself going through different emotions. One of which I recognized as jealousy for not having a soapbox like that of my own to express myself. It was easy to read the comments and (falsely) conclude many people were just "yes men" parroting the creator. At first, that was my reaction.

Of course, it isn't like that. There are simpler and less sinister explanations, including "he just expressed himself and many others agree in whole or in part." I too could agree on many things he said, just as I can recoil at toxic statement he made suggesting the developers want to make the game less fun. It took some time to mentally unravel my thoughts about each subject he presented.

The problem with some reaction videos is they can be biased / misinformed which can lead to a bunch of people believing the wrong thing.

For example, in regards to the recent removal of the dye slot on armor. I believe that was only done to fix a bug related to placing something in it.

Unfortunately, some people just assumed it was part of some diabolical scheme to sell DLC armor...

As mentioned by Rick, we always intended to update the new armor system to support dyes just like the old system but it just hadn't been a priority. (It has been bumped in priority now)

To be fair, we could of done a better job communicating why the slot was removed.

On the flip side, I can understand why it may have been overlooked / deemed unessecarry given that amount of other bigger changes / fixes that went into 2.0.

Seems like you would save yourselves a lot of development time listening and communicating more if for nothing else than the several renditions of skill systems in place let alone some of the revisions needing to happen with 2.0.

Plus the animosity would be a lot lower. While I don't agree with it and fundamentally think you guys want a good game as well it'd easy to understand the sentiment that people felt left in the cold for so long with no proper communication.

Well, if only you had a community manager who could take care of something like that.

A lack of communication is the underlying issue behind most current controversies. A good community manager can explain even the most controversial changes in a way that makes the reasons clear and acceptable to the community.

Does adding plague spitters to the football_stadium POI count as evil?
It's as evil as adding a bunch of Frostclaws to the Hybrid Mining POI. Their long-range attacks are really annoying.

In my opinion, calling a content creator like JaWoodle (using him as a singular example) an "influencer" is like labelling Reddit a social media. Technically correct in some aspects, but my mind drifts more towards X/TikTok/etc. creators than someone who produces video game content for a living.

Personally, I detest the word "influencer" (even if for some it's deserved) much like I dislike the words "content" and "consumer". (Don't even get me started on "content consumers"... Ugh. You may as well call your audience your cattle farm at that point.) Call it a self-imposed delusion, but I prefer words that are less "robotic" or "corporate" in a way. For instance, I would rather be referred to as a civilian by the press/government/etc. than a product consumer, thank you very much.

@Laz Man Community Manager. You need one, especially seeing BLoodmoons coming out soon (i guess) and the other games that are WIP. One that is able to post important things everywhere and not just on twitter or reddit. It´s a freaking joke that announcements/polls don´t get posted here and on steam. This is the offical forum. Everything that is posted elsewhere should be posted here first. Like the post about glass jars. There is people who won´t touch reddit with a 10 foot pole and the same goes for twitter. For reasons we aren´t allowed to talk about here.

I mean, maybe, but one of the biggest issues is more that people in general are stupid and jump to conclusions and always assume the worst. Would better communication help? Sure. But people not being braindead, impulsive morons would probably help more. And in even more things than just the ole vidya games.

I would view myself as a content creator. I view it as a violation of fundamental human rights to be an influencer as it implies a belief that a certain way is superior to another. It ain't superior if you are still alive doing it YOUR way.

Umm.. lol :)
"Violations of fundamental human rights" deserve jail time. And some "ways" Are better than others, for example: "respecting the fundamental human rights" vs "living your best life as a spree killer".

Maybe try not to abuse categories quite That much.

I have issues with folks cramming stuff and ideologies down my throat and being the only option for a message. And hearing the same message regardless of medium or channel no matter where I look. That is where I have issues with influencers.

Are you held at gunpoint to hear them out? Or otherwise forced to "listen" to them? Human rights huh? Just choose your sources. Really its as easy as that.

-edit- i have no facebook, x, instagram, youtube or any other algorithm driven media. Try it. You ll be surprised.

I do cosplay and run fan tables at events. Social media is unavoidable. I only have social media for my cosplay stuff. I have managed to avoid most all of the toxic cliquish drama in my segment. Even growing the youtube channel has been a pain. Youtube keeps raising the bar I have to reach before I can monetize things.
