PC V2.0 Storms Brewing Dev Diary

Speaking of forest storms, is the design dead set on them having no mechanical impact? I completely understand not having a damaging storm in the starter area, but a minor annoyance would both encourage building or using roofed shelters and get starting players used to the mechanic before they hit the harder biomes.

How about an entirely visual effect? Perhaps it gets really, really foggy. Thick fogs are pretty wild in that zombies come at you out of the mist. It might drive you inside so you can have walls behind you.

Personally, I like the idea of Feral Sense being on only when it is foggy, or the distance for feral sense being related to the amount of fog.
I am speculating whether storms have an effect on zombie sense and we just haven't been told about it. Could be confirmation bias but whenever I hole up in a POI to weather a storm I seem to get a ton of visitors, far more than usual. It's possible I'm making more noise I suppose, as I'll tend to salvage the heck out of a place if I've cleared it and the storm is still running.

As for the forest storm idea, partly I'm just irked with myself that I'll leave the roof off my dwelling for two weeks, when vultures show up on horde night. It's totally a me problem: I'm irked by the immersion breaking gaminess of building a dwelling with no roof, but game brain knows there's no reason to have a roof since even the cold/wet debuff is no longer a thing. I kind of want some penalty to not having access to a proper shelter.

That said, I think having a 'my first deadly weather effect' trainer in the forest can only be a good thing.

You two, ZZ and Adam, are into something.

I am playing with joy the latest update and remembered how was it in early alphas where we couldn`t see zeds because of fog, only hear them and went nuts, adding to that was the smell from meat back then, that attracted them.

Was thinking similar thing, of something like adding another level of difficulty, confusion, but also survival at first place, while weather is grumpy.

Ehrm... did you miss 2.0 completely?
Aren't the Desert Spitter and Frostclaw not new "zombies"? 🤔
Truth is I've never seen a Spitter or a Frostclaw. Now I'm curious.

I guess I'll give the old storms a try.

Maybe feral sense will have nice synergy with the storms.

I actually can't stand the main dynamics of this game: 7 Days to Blood Moon and repetitive trader grinding. It get sso boring standing on a platform waiting for the blood moon to come. The repetitive thunder sound is just annoying. However, I guess storms and feral nights will get pretty spicy. I wish they would add some different zombie skins, a little variety would be nice. Maybe have variants of the POIs, so it's not so repetitive.

Yeah, I was hyped for the storms but it doesn't really add anything to the game for me.

I think th storms should take a page out of Icarus's book and make them damage buildings under a certain level. So a burnt forest storm might damage un-upgraded frames, while a desert storm would damage wood, and a snow storm would damage cobblestone, and a wasteland storm could even damage concrete or something

Might need tweaked so cobble or concrete were safe in all, but you get the point. That makes storms much scarier when you run into a crappy wooden PoI and it starts slowly being ripped apart around you and you are furiously running around trying to repair holes and walls before the storm tears the entire building down

Moments like that are really fun and memorable in Icarus which has a similar storm system
Ever since they added traders, the developers have neglected zombies.

This updated literally added two new zombies that are pretty dang threatening, two new end game types that can shred your base, and made zombies able to crouch under 1 block holes which is a MASSIVE shake up for most non-super cheese bases.

How is that neglecting zombies lol

They wander around the Desert and Snow respectively. You'll know they're around when you suddenly hear the buzzing of flies or get hit by a boulder.
AND THEY ARE APPARENTLY EVERYWHERE! I played at my brother's and the snow had them everywhere. They should tone it down and have a chance to find stronger ones in the wild like ferals/rads

I'll probably do a post about that

Yeah the fog effect on the playstation 4 really made for creepy atmosphere. I know it was simply for performance but it was cool.

I agree, they need to bring back the smell mechanic. Added a level of danger by bringing cooked food or having raw meat on you.

Suppose the issue is there that a lot of poi's would get skimmed if they are made of wood in theory? Tad impractical, much as i like the idea of structural damage...

So many things they should bring back and are just sitting in the files but they simply don't use them. Rip stank

Bro those aren't even zombies.

I can maybe see the spitter as zombie like, thought it reminds me of a mummy more. (No, not my mother.) The frostclaw reminds me of a Yeti and it seems out of place. I also think the mutant acid creature and the cop spitting acid are weird, but I can live with them all because they're fun to fight.

Similarly, I can live with the badges for biome access as I see the achievements to acquire them as acclimation. Yes, I would have made different choices for how these things get represented and visualized, but the game is fun. There's always something I can quibble over, but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy what we have.

I feel like the solution to that is the storms just affect POI the player is in / close to. Which AFAIK is already kind of how the storms work in the first place, they are localized and basically follow the player around and don't affect zombies etc

Feels like the NPC rocket launcher who followed me around firing at where all the zombies were (me) at horde night - hilarious.

Storms damaging POI would be bad. And brown blocks could break a quest. Unless you said that a POI that had an active quest is safe, it would just lead to a lot of quests that can't be completed and a lot of upset players. And making POI with active quests safe while others aren't wouldn't make sense.
