PC V2.0 Storms Brewing Dev Diary

You’re comparing the tyrannical oppression of a nation without any freedom of speech, press, religion, travel, property or individual expression to an online community centered on the luxury item of a video game? That really trivializes the tragedy of North Korea.

PIMPS ARE NORTH KOREA CONFIRMED I KNEW IT!!!

April means one step closer too 2.0
April means one step closer to the edge. And I'm about to.........break!

so many of the games are very generic and maybe it's just my old ass, but so many look the damn same now.
Things have always been like that. In anything, there is always generally a few unique things and everything else is just a copy. It's safer to copy. I think that maybe technology has made things so much easier to copy with accuracy that it might be the reason things look more samey today than ever before.

because the majority do not directly complain, therefore everything must be perfect...and even if they have anything to say...it does not matter.
When the majority doesn't like something and also doesn't complain, what they do is STOP PLAYING - and from what can be seen on at least steam charts, that doesn't seem to be the case. Most people aren't as passionately invested in video games as internet complainers are. Internet complainers chain themselves to edge case situations that only a few care about.

I think it is also that a lot of developers use the same few things when making games... Unity and Unreal Engine are the biggest, I think.  You do still have some studios who make their own stuff, but so many just use the same tools, which tend to lead to games looking very similar.

In the past, studios did a lot more of their own stuff because there wasn't much choice. Of course, there were also a lot of games that looked similar in the past as well, but often for different reasons, such as hardware limitations (text based games in the earlier days or games using very basic CGA graphics, for example).  But I think you did have more diversity in how games looked in the past.

I also think that you are right that it is safer to copy what others have done instead of creating their own ideas.  You see it in movies today as well.  Rather than make a new movie, they just remake old ones or make live action versions of animated movies.  There is a definite lack of creativity these days.  It is unfortunate.  So many games these days just aren't worth playing.  They are often shallow copies of other games you've always played for years.

The clearest example of this is cars. Cars used to have unique looks, but too many models weren't selling as well due to that uniqueness, so they all started looking the same. A Mercedes from the 80s has a similar look to a Toyota from the 80s.

And as long as shareholders run the show things will continue to lack creativity. It's too risky to do something unique. The problem is, independents follow that path too. When Soundcloud first took off, I thought we were in for some really creative, homegrown new music from people. But it didn't take long for everyone to start copying each other. I love technology, but it does make people lazy because it makes it easier for them to have a chance at success.

As for everyone using Unity and Unreal, how much influence do they really have on the aesthetics and feel of a game? I'm sure there's some, but Tarkov doesn't remind me of 7 Days. Evil Dead the Game didn't look or feel like Fortnite. Hell, I thought Evil Dead was on Unreal 5 because of how much better it looked than any equivalent game that I was aware of. Also, do engines have any real bearing on how models look? It all comes down to the fear of taking a chance.

Burnt Forest Smoke Effect

Wasteland Wilderness POIs and Trees

These two biome changes are SO NEEDED. The burnt forest never felt smoldering/toasty enough to me :)  that smoke effect is NICE. The old wasteland trees made no sense to me, these definitely fit better in context. I hope they add many more remnants to the wasteland as well. The debris factor needs to be upped/varied, from this screen it's lookin SWEET

I first launched the game on December 23, 2019. Since then, I have played 1996 hours. And during this time, I have never installed a single mod.
You are missing out on some amazingly fun mods.

Think of it like this, you go to Krispy Kreme to buy some doughnuts. There's a couple of dozen different types of doughnuts to choose from, but every time you go there, you always only buy the cinnamon doughnuts, and never anything else.

Personally, I always get pretty much the same thing (specific to the eatery) from any place I go.

I agree though. I've tried mods, and while they might have some cool features, there's usually a fair amount of jank and stylistic choices that I don't like.

Modlets are about as far as I go. Simple things like lighting changes, path smoothing, POIs and basic zombies.

Not only that but it's like you go to Krispy Kreme to buy your regular doughnut and Khaine walks over and says, "Hey buddy, try this one out. It's on me."

I mean, there's also people who will only ever play DF and refuse to try anything else as well, same thing basically. "variety is the spice of life" as the saying goes

I just used that as an example. My point was that mods are free of charge. You don't have to risk paying for something that you may end up not enjoying. You can always keep vanilla as your base camp and return to it often after trying a few mods that won't cost you a cent to try out.

But instead of a donut he hands you a hamburger.

A hamburger that has donuts instead of buns and sausage and bacon instead of beef. Mmmmmmm....

@Roland, have you played the latest experimental? Do they "use" you in that way? I mean there's a lot of value in a math senior fiddling around new systems. If so, how does the new update (in your opinion) feel vs 1.3?
