I would say, "play however you have fun".

This is not a competitive game, and there is no right or wrong way to play it, or right or wrong things to do.

If you have fun doing some things, do it, if there are parts of the game that you find boring, remove them. That is why there are "game options" and mods.

I don't know if it's cheese, I put myself in a position to be attacked from a single direction and put poles and obstacles in the way to slow them down. It's what I'd do in real life. I don't use electricity so it's all melee and brass. At higher levels I'll do an open field horde with a few resting spots to repair weapons or heal if needed.

Early game I'll use the parking deck as a horde base. Same principle, one way to get me at the top.

I always try to adhere to reality, even to the point of extra work just for it to look "normal".

However, I had moved to the wasteland, had mistaken how long it'd take to get my horde base up, and by 19:00 on horde night (day 77, so a decent bit in) I was still rushing. This is mid/late game, wasteland and on insane difficulty with maxxed out zombie count, so the horde base needed to be tight or it was coming down.

Rather than risk it, I literally looked for the nearest skyscraper (Dishong), nerd poled my way half way up, built a sketchy ledge and waited there until the horde night ended.

So, in reality, as much as I say, "don't cheese the game", when it comes down to it, I'm not against a little bit of cheese.

@Laz Man please post your subway station defense video. I really enjoyed watching that. I think any base style is good if you are having fun but there is almost something cinematic about defending in a realistic way using existing structures that is just amazing. I’ve been meaning to replicate Laz’s experience for just that kind of fun.

In case he doesn’t post the video, essentially his group started at the entrance with spikes set up and shooting targets. When they began to get overwhelmed they retreated down the stairs and down the corridor. Then they retreated behind a barricade and waited for the zombies to break through and then started killing them again. They had a final fallback point down in the station (they built some subway cars ahead of time to make it even more immersive) eventually they were overrun with zombies coming in from multiple entry points and had to survive until dawn.

I always enjoy a horde night battle that involves a few fallback points more than one where the zombies have no chance of ever breaking through the first barricade— although, full disclosure, I’ve played that way plenty of times too.

Our group is pretty much endgame on our server so what we have been doing for fun is picking new locations to do bloodmoons at.  With so many different POIs in the game, it's always a refreshing challenge to pick a new one to defend from.
