PC General gripes: What do you think?

So far my only 2 gripes are:

Whose idea was it to make it so that you can only improve skills by reading 163000 books in a zombie apocalypse!? Bring back skill use leveling!

And

Why does it seem like we have less than 25% of our former building options?

I’m trying to figure out if a few things in the 1.0 Xbox version are bugs or intentional.

1. I don’t level up from doing things. In the old version, if you made a tool you got better at making tools, if you mined you increased your mining level. I made a lot of tools and mined a lot but didn’t increase those levels. I had to find magazines to do that and that used to supplement, not increase your levels. makes sense to level up by taking action, magazines only is too slow. I assumed this was a bug but

2 when I drink water, the container goes away. It used to be you kept the container, it’s going to be much harder to refill water if you don’t have anything to pick up water from water sources.

3 I know this one’s been said but 2 player max for gen s hosting should have been clearer. It’s fine since an gen x can host 4, but there were indications the game would support up to 8 in a world, and so to go backwards is surprising.

This has been a thing for a few now welcome to the pc version.

You have way more block options now vs the old console version. I'm not sure what the controller buttons are to pull them up but if you make a frame you can hold the button to bring up the shape menu and on the menu when you select it has idk 100s if not at least a 1000 or more different shapes.

As far as wet concrete or any of that then no they done away with that awhile back. If those are what you talking about.

Forget what you know about the old console version... the game has had loads of updates and changes since then.

1: it learn by reading now. Not learn by doing. The books/magazines increase your skills from that... so no more making 600 stones axes just to max out tools and weapons or whatever it was back then. Also the outfits help with some skills now.

2: empty jars are no longer a thing. You find merky water in loot and or make a dew collector. Also you can drink with your hands straight from any open water source. It nasty water so you risk sickness but you can drink it.

3: that out of my control. All I can say is I never heard console would be 8 players. I know on pc for performance it is best to keep it under 8 players but not limited to it. But never heard them say the console would be 8 players on release. They did say at some point they like for crossplay so maybe when and if that happens on a rented server more can play idk. As far as anything else on this I really have no answers as I'm not the right one to give those answers.

You still level up from doing things, it's just not set in say you mine you become better at mining. Instead you get general exp that you can then increase strength attribute or get miner 69 skill that helps with mining.

No empty water bottles is intentional to make you work more to live, I think once you build a few collector it gets easier

Agree the limit on series S for player count should have been communicated before purchase like Baldurs gate 3 local coop was

Would have been helpful for them to include a prompt somewhere that tells you what button to push, I'll have to look around for the solution here.

Figured out a solition to this: Turn death penaltys off and feed yourself to the zeds.

Cures hunger, thirst, infection and anything else that ails you xD

Near as I can tell so far it's intentional.

Do not like the book thing. It's ridiculous, i have to rely on RNG to improve every single facet of my tool/weapon etc upgrades? I'm on day 35 and my gear and stats are complete and utter dogs**t because I'm a wasteland idiot savant.

I mean you're going to tell me I'm smart enough to build a gyrocopter but I cant figure out how to use a frigging wrench or sharpen a stone tool without an instruction manual?

They really dropped the ball with this nonsense.

I'm coming from the old console version myself, and I can tell you right now that the new version has way more building options. First you need to craft "Building Blocks", then you have to open the "Radial Menu" while having the building blocks equipped. From there you can select "Shapes" to change it to what you want such as ladders, poles, ramps, stairs and much much more. You can also select Advance Rotation, Simple Rotation, Copy Rotation, etc.

I'm currently playing the new Console Edition as well but I'm playing with Keyboard & Mouse so I don't know which button it is on a controller, but on a Keyboard you hold down the R key to bring up the radial menu. Also, the new Building Blocks act like frames from the old console version but way better and much more advanced. After placing all of the building blocks/shapes down you want, you can then upgrade them to Wood, Cobblestone, Concrete, etc.

I think it's holding down X with frame in hand to bring up block menu.  Is there a way to favorite block types?

Yeah, sorry I don't use controller so can't help past that. Only can say that they do have loads of shapes. Maybe this will help you know when you have a bow and arrow. The button you hold down that brings up the wheel to change ammo... try using that same button holding it down to bring up the wheel while holding a frame in your hand.

......

The book system is a mix thing. Some like it some don't. I will say this whatever books you read or whatever points you spend into you are more likely to get more of those books vs random books. Not saying you will not get random books along with those. But you might notice that if you read forge ahead book then you will probably see them more often... if you point into idk melee or something then you might find more books along that skill vs range. If you spread across on books and skills then it random out of those what you find and then randomly something you not point into or read.... honestly it was strange when they first added it but once you play a few times it not to bad. It just takes time to get used to.

Yes, I believe you can add different block shapes to a "Favorites" list so you can always have easy access to finding them.
In the large block type selection menus? I know you can in the basic crafting screen, maybe my eyes not the best and it's there. I did notice if you look at a block you can copy the type in the radial menu

I know on PlayStation you hold the square button (of course while holding the building block) and the radial menu comes up. The upper selection on the wheel is the shapes menu....and there is a sh*t ton!!

Definitely more shapes than the old console version.

I haven't seen anyone that likes the book learning except for the developers for some ungodly reason. I've only seen complaints since they implemented it. It just really blows. I always mod it out on pc. Kinda stuck on the console tho.

My biggest gripe is no split screen. That's the only reason I even played the console version so I could play with friends.

Well now you’ve seen someone who likes the book learning system. It allows me to quest/explore/loot during the day, where I get plenty of books, and resource gather/build at night. All things I really enjoy. I also don’t have to spam craft things any more to have them improve which I didn’t enjoy. So for me this is an improvement.

Books are good in some ways bad in others, I like not having to craft a million frames just to smash them and repeat to boost my crafting skill, however when looting in a team it means we need to watch and hold some books for the designated farmer, builder, weapon maker. Spending a lot of time over weight till we meet up and divvy up books
