Save game XP issue - the strangest thing just happened...

Sorry, I'm just copy-pasting a .txt I worked on to report this issue.

¬

Did you start a new game and re-create the issue? No
Have you validated your files through Steam? Yes

OK. I was in a game which was paused via the escape key and simply sitting there in the menu, and the power went out, and took my game with it. Now when I tried to reload the savegame, I spawned naked and with little equipment, as in the startgame. It was the startgame. That's a big bug. I'm sure the power-out caused it because it was the only thing that happened before this bug and I suppose the game simply didn't save correctly because I wasn't exiting properly.

The saving grace is that ALL of my placed buildings and storage are still in the same place, filled with items - but I have noticed if I had or hadn't searched a few items like trash, for instance, by realizing there was no 'untouched' in the visual that is given when you look at the item. So those items have retained their 'memory'.

I can't tell you what level I was because I don't remember, but I had sunk a lot of points into strength and skullcrusher, and now I'm in the same position with all my storage, but with a fresh body and zero skill points spent. It must have something to do with the saving system. So that means that the save has remembered what I've placed, what I've looted, what I've stored, but not governed my characters' experience.

* I did notice that a truck I KNEW I had looted was seen as "untouched", and zombies had spawned at that POI, causing my death. I'm in Navezgane in the area where there is a big lake.

I know I laid down a bedroll before the power-out, but I can't tell you exactly where I was.

I'm sorry I can't give you more information. I've posted the link to the two logs from today and one from yesterday and the day before, 28.8, 27.8, and 26.8 respectively, AND the save files, (from both Saves and SavesLocal, from AppData/Roaming/7DaysToDie).

Please tell me if that doesn't work.

Non-essential comments:

On that note, it would be nice to have an in-game notification that announces when you have saved the game, because even though the bedroll system works, it is so unclear, and I'm constantly worrying about it and have been since I started playing several years ago. And clearly, in this case, it didn't work.

¬

Regardless of how this ends up, there's something to be said for this and the management of savegames: it would be really nice to be able to manually save, and although I haven't lost my construction or my loot, I have been thrown into the world green again, and this shouldn't have happened. If I had a manual savegame this would be nothing to fix. It would be as simple as a double-click.

We are working on redundancy aid/better backup system indeed. Unfortunately, power loss like this can cause file corruption like that, partially mitigated by a solid NVME drive. For future reference, whenever you have a crash or power outage like that, it's a good idea to back up the save before loading the game, so if you have any corruption you can use the .bak files instead of the main save to revert to a good save. The way the system is now which will change it will reset the corrupt files when it detects corruption and then save, so once you do that you're stuck with that. Sorry about that =/, If your .bak files in the save are still older than what the other ones are you can try using those. But if they're the same files, unless you've a backup there's little you can do. There are dev items in the cm menu that you can use to get progression/levels/etc back though. Enter "cm" in the console, hit U to open the creative menu (lightbulb icon in the menus), search for "dev" and click the buildings icon up top in the menu (Dev items).

As a note, your log will show when you leveled up and include your level so you can figure out what level you were.  Use the console command giveselfxp followed by a number to slowly level yourself up to where you were.  You cannot remove xp, so don't go too quickly and overshoot where you were.  You can start high like around a few hundred thousand of you are a high level.  Just watch your level changes to see where you are with each time you run the command.  You will get all your perk points back and can spend them like normal.  For books or magazines, you can give yourself stacks of them to read, though it isn't as easy to figure out where you were on those and so you may have to just guess.  The creative menu will give you the items you lost.  By changing the search by one letter repeatedly for an item, the quality level will change and you can find the level you had before.

I only got so far with that, searching for "dev" didn't yield any results. I've started a new game, should do.

There are several items you can use to help yourself out getting back to where you were. The quest turn-in tickets will give you a turn-in phase of a quest that you can turn-in at any trader and it counts for that tier. Use the XP ones to give yourself levels too, or use the console command Riamus mentioned.

  • Press F1
  • type in and enter cm
  • Press F1
  • Press U
  • Click the icon circled and enter dev where it's underlined
