PC Changes to Screamers

I wonder when the heat is generated.... when the block is broken or on each hit.   If its each hit, that would explain why I seem to get far more screamers using an auger.
Iirc it is on each hit. I forget where I saw it though, is there a journal entry or loading screen tool tip about the activity map (aka heat map)?

If they could just make it so she screams when you are actually in line of sight, and not just detected, they could probably comfortably beef up what happens when she screams.
I don't mind that she spawns due to mining, but her screaming and summoning zombies on the surface while you are underground just isn't a great mechanic.

I dont think I've ever had a screamer scream without seeing me.

Hu? I've never seen a screamer while mining with an auger. Imho screamers spawn way less. Even around our base with forges, camp fires, cement mixers, workbenches and chem stations running they only occur rarely.
How often would you actually auger in the same chunk? If you made a tunnel with an auger, that heat gets spread out among the chunks you pass through. Once your base is established with other heat-generating things, you probably already mined all you can in those chunks, so why would that even cause screamer spawns? You need to mine with the auger enough in one chunk (16 x 16 area), in other words... it definitely will spawn screamers.

I've been mining in the same chunk for something like 50 days.   I keep uncovering more and more ore

That doesn't say much. I could mine a block per day.
A chunk is only a 16 x 16 area. No ore veins go straight down from the surface to bedrock. They curve downward a little and move outward. Even If they did, it would not take 50 days to clear a chunk with an auger.

Well, its not only 1 chunk.... its a 100x60 pit currently 20 blocks deep.

It's 16x16 in Minecraft, how certain are we that it is just 16X16 here in 7d2d?

Yeah see... that's like 28 chunks. Some of the heat you produce in one chunk seeps into neighboring chunks, but still... that's a lot of spread.

Because I tested it with the console.

Also, heat dissipates rather quickly once you stop mining, or once a forge stops, or once you remove a torch, you stop shooting a gun, etc. I think it ticks down every 10 minutes.

Ok.... doesn't change the fact that a day mining gets me 15-20 screamers.
Are you using a lot of torches? Torches can skyrocket the heat map once you have enough of them in a chunk (or neighboring chunks). I knew how many back in A17 and A18, but haven't checked this alpha.

I say "enough of them" because on their own, a few torches will reach some max heat and nothing will happen. If there are enough to where the heat reaches 100, a screamer spawns, the heat resets to 0, then goes up again.... it cycles infinitely.

Nope.... nothing in the mine except me and my auger

I wasn't asking to stop it, lol.... I was just commenting that mining metal with an auger generates a ton of heat
lol, well then...
Umm. Yes, it does. haha

I'm just going nuts because there are contradicting posts in this thread and it happens every alpha. Misinformation gets spread around regarding heat and screamers.

The citation link itself is dead. It was to a forum post so probably something that got deleted either in the transition to the new forum system or by a moderator doing site maintenance.
Yeah, most likely it was on the old message boards

I have tried this in a test world. It is per hit and the breaking of the block generates additional heat.

A click on the mouse button to start the auger generates 1% heat. A hit on the metal generates 0.2% heat and the breaking of the metal block generates 2.84% heat.

For comparison, a block of coal ore produces only 0.5% heat when it breaks and there is no heat per hit.

By the way I had to create a new test world because my old test world was bugged and no heat was generated at all.

Welp, now you know how to stop it. If you have a 100x60 area you are working in, move around a little.
A little will not be sufficient. I've done some testing and mining a single block of iron ore can increase the heat by 6 to 12% depending on how many points you have in miner69 and how good the auger is. Break 10 to 15 iron ore blocks in one chunk and it is screamer time.
