PC Is Tracking Bugged?

thornnnn

Refugee
I crouch (c) and get the green puppy dog feet symbols..  but nothing is in my compass.. notihng is on my map.. i see no tracks on the ground..   sometimes i see a fox/bear/mountain lion.. but so far that's it.  When this is working properly  will i see footprints on the ground in game?    I hvae seen the symbols in the compass.. but never have seen anything on the map.  can someone please how this is supposed to work?  is it normal to get green puppy dog feet (tracking) and no other indication something is  there?  What should i do when i see the green  puppy dog feet?

edit added:   This is my conclusin.

1. the green paws on left indicate something is in range  100meters

2. no green paw prints == nothing there to track

3. when you see green paws you can waste your time and do a 360 to see if there is an animal sillouete in  your compass (bears lions and wolves show up, sometimes chickens)

4. or  when u get green pawns run wround and chop every tree in 100 meters down.. then stack 10 bale of  hay  leaping on top of them as you stack them..  and then look down from 10 squares up for the animal that triggered the green paws..

5 and that's the current state of how tracking works.

green paws mean something in range.. that';s usually the best u get.. finding it is up to you.  other things tracking is supposed to do .. map? compass? happen rarely if ever cept for mountain lions and bears..  i dont even check compass now.. unless in snow biomes where the mountain lions are.

The way it seems to work (for now) is: you see the icon on your compass, map, and on top of the animal. These are somewhat range-dependent, separately for each indicator. I've also had situations where I have only seen the paws-icon, but I'm not sure if it's:

- a straight up bug,

- too far to show on any of the places it should, or

- maybe a type of animal you can't track at that rank

Even as a perception player I chose not to perk into that skill. I think it is not worth the points.

From a single players point of view there are several skills which help you really early game with your food porblems:

farming skill: Thats bang for the buck: you get recipies, cheaper planting plots and a heafty bonus to the amount of plants you can harvest. If you want a good and reliable food source definitly perk into it.

Grease monkey: driving is better than running, faster und you use up less stamina = you need less food. On top of it, you can hunt far mor better if you can roam arround.

But if you like minigames, than it is a nice way to amuse yourself.   😉

Better barter: why working for your food, if you can buy it.

If you are talking about the green paws at the left side of the screen, that is the cool down for the ability, which happens every time regardless of whether you sense something or not. If something that you can track is in range when you crouch, then you get the compass, map and sprite.

Unless it changed in b173, no. The green paws buff doesn't pop up if you don't track anything, accompanied by the on-screen tip "you don't see any tracks here" or some such. It's not a cooldown, it's a duration for the tracking - during which you can operate un-crouched. You can even refresh it back to 20 secs by crouching again.

Huh, they must have changed that. I haven't specc'd into or used the perk since A18, just don't find it useful enough to spend points on. Or possibly I am remembering incorrectly/misinterpreting what I saw the the few times I did use it. Thanks for the clarification!

Thanks for the replies.  I'm very high level at this point  120? not sure so i was really stretching things to find stuff to put points into..  Prob is my very first quest (off the scrolls) was to kill one of each animal.. and  day 200 or so.. no bucks.. none.. whole map explored.  there were bucks in the beginning of game but once i killed them there was no respawn.  so i maxed tracking.  sometimes i see animal silhouettes in the compass sometimes not.. and one time i saw one blink in and out before just going out perm.  I wish the devs would explain how tracking works instead of having to play this guessing game.. Right now when the paws turn green.. i leap stack 10 bales of hay.. to go way up in teh sky.. so i can see behind grass.. to find the rabbit or chicken..  noting else spawns in grass.. in snow i get leopard and bear.. and does but no buck.. cus of course i need a buck to do the quest. .. This is the second time i have played this game for hundreds of turns.. never to find the animal needed to solve the very first quest.. last time it was  a chicken.  now there are chickens everywhere but no buck.. devs please make one animal exist of every type somewhere in the 8k x 8k world  if it exists i can find it.  Thanks all who tried to help.  btw i almost NEVER get a compass indication.. less than 1 out of 100  and none in the last few weeks of game time. i find them buy stacking hale bays and looking down on the world.   Thats how tracking REALLY works.  green paws.. then go up 10 squares on hale bays..  and watch for movement.

If you're at 1/100 for the icon, you're pretty definitely bugged. Level 120, I would assume you're keeping the world across several patches? That's a likely culprit.

no i spend 20 hours a  day playing.. and i know how to level pretty fast.. its legit.. but i dont wanna mention it here cus devs might nerf it.  there was 1 upgrade to experimental but the game is less than 2 weeks old.  and the problems i'm seeing here are problems that have existed over major patches.. i doubt they were just introduced by that minor patch 5 days ago.

each hoard night i never die.. and get around 100-200k experience.. thats the fastest way but i had methods to level to the point i could make my killzone fo hoards.  my base has never been overrun since day 1.  and i have never died on a hoard night.  my greatest cause of death is hitting r while in my gyrocopter.  and OR from falling asleep while playing the game an starving to death.  why did they put the exit button so close to the manuvering buttons.  ya i can re assign that key.. not sure why i haven't.

Ok, no shade intended, it was just quite a high number for a five-days-in-existence patch... ;) And they have been meddling about the animal spawns in the last couple patches, that might - for example - change entity IDs and mess up the skill that way. Hmm, spawn in a fergettin' elixir and reset the talents just in case?

Does "major patches" mean you had the issue in A18 already?

In A19 I've used the first rank of the skill to track chickens while running from place to place, quite handy to track while recovering sta. More than 80% success for the icons for me at least, so, can't really complain myself.

No mods either?
