I had to stop and think about that a minute and picked the workbench. I will eventually either loot the schematic or the actual item but you never can be sure when.

If you're having trouble finding certain schematics set the loot respawning to 5, then just find a town with more than one crack a book, build a temporary shelter nearby but not in the town, and the loot will respawning every 5 in game days just make sure you empty them out completely. Loot cant spawn in a container that still has stuff in it.
