Zombies and ladders - weird behavior

Not sure if this is tied to the whole "going to taller spots" changes, but during a blood moon my friend and I did tonight, the zombies kept climbing our ladder as normal, but then stopped partway up and started beating on the blocks. Is this supposed to happen?

They werent even bothering making at least proper ladder climb animation for zombies!
But realisticly they shouldnt even use ladders
And about ur post - i guess its their new behaviour

Is there any chance there was damage to the ladder or the block behind it? They tend to attack damaged blocks. I haven't used ladders for zombies on horde night in a very long time, so I don't know if anything has changed there.

No, everything had just been freshly upgraded and untouched.
