XP for Exploration?

I was wondering if perhaps if there might be interest in a small XP reward for revealing part of your map, such that it would reward exploration?

The game likes to reward activities like harvesting resources. The rewards are usually small.

Why not? It could work.

I don't know if it has been suggested already but just in case, I would add special biome poi. To encourage exploration.

Isn't there a limit on map exposure and once you hit that limit previously explored areas become hidden? Would that have any impact on earning xp? Would "double dipping" previously explored areas count? If so, if I just ran back and forth between two areas that kept being revealing and getting hidden to rack up xp would it break the game balance?

I don't think I've ever noticed that. I think once you reveal an area it stays revealed, though I could see where it updates as people change the map. (For instance, things players build show on maps.) I wouldn't want to give XP just on a revealed part being updated. I'm just thinking of when grey gets replaced with detail.

Couldn't something like that be based on the Region files as they are populated. If they are
indexed with an I/O signature similar to all of the objects are in game, you should not be able
to double dip.

That might make it so that only one person gets the exploration experience, but if so that's not a bad idea.

I've heard about the map only allowing a certain amount to be revealed, but I've never seen it happen. But I only play 8k and probably never had more than 40-50% revealed in any one game, so that may be why. But something like that might be nice. The only thing about it is that I don't know that many people would actively try to do it, so it would just be free experience for doing what you do anyhow. As you say, it would be small amounts of experience. You'd get more by killing zombies and not have to run all over the place to do it. Maybe it would work better to do something like a larger amount of experience just to visit each trader, making you want to go to every town. Even people who do the Open Trade Route quests may often only visit those 5 traders and not bother going to other towns. But that only gets people to go to other towns. It doesn't get them to explore the whole map, which is what I think your hope would be for this suggestion.

There could be a new achievement for visiting a certain number of POI in a single game - 300 or something large like that. Visiting meaning you are on the POI. I don't think there would be a good way to count how many POI are cleared because you can't see if you miss killing anything if it's not a quest. But visiting could work. And with a large enough number, it would get people to really explore a map to get that achievement. Or it could even be a challenge that people could do each game. Perhaps part of a new challenge group that is about exploration.

I try to find all the traders if possible. I have to buy magazines from someone. In general, I only look for them for the magazines.

I rarely buy magazines unless I'm missing only one or two for something I want to make and happen to see that what I need. But yeah, that is one reason to go looking for traders. Another is to buy solar panels more quickly. But even though I also tend to go and find all the traders, I don't think most people do.

If I remember correctly, that was tweaked a looooong time ago by faatal to avoid that to happen. Unsure if it can still happen with 10k maps as I never explored 100% of them, but my guess is "nope any more". He fixed it... back in 2019? I don't recall. We are getting old.
Edit: Yes we can explore 100% and more in any size. I cheated. The file.... the sheer size of it..., marvellous.... wonderful. I'm crying in gigabytes.
